Pure comfort

Comfy in the manner of Hercule Poirot. The fantasy setting is rich with history and color, but requires little effort from the reader to recall or keep track. Just be swept along by the story and mystery, and don’t sweat it when you can’t keep track of the labyrinthine structure of the Untheilineise Court or the Ethuveraz.

Brought it all together

It is a solid conclusion of the series, most of the lose ends got wrapped up. It was paced a bit different the the first two, and I think they were better, but still a good book and worth a credit!

Inconsistent Pronunciation With Previous Books

The only complaint I have is that the reader changed pronunciation of some words in the prior two books. Aside from that, the story and narrator were fantastic.

Very good, but…

I was thrilled to return to the story of Thara Celehar! I very much enjoyed the first two books in this series, and this one is much like those: we follow Thara as he discharges his duties as a “witness for the dead”, which this time includes witnessing for dead dragons. This book has a lot more action than the first two: kidnapping, assassination attempts, deadly dragon ghosts, and more. But there are still the usual little things that always crop up in these books, such as Thara’s attempts to find yet another suitable coat of office!

This book also goes deeper into Thara’s friendships, and that is where the book stumbled.

SPOILER ALERT!

The author spends 2 1/2 books building up a romance between Thara and Ilana, the flamboyant opera composer, only to pull the rug out from under the reader by having Ilana say “I am not sexually attracted to you. I like women. I’m just a REALLY intense friend!” I couldn’t believe it! There was major foreshadowing all the way up to this point, with meaningful looks, touching of hands, and the like. And then the author just goes “Psych! Fooled you!”

WHY? I felt cheated. Yes, there was the soldier with the “pretty eyes” that Thara kept noticing, who then conveniently gets assigned to guard Thara, and it looks like there could be something that will come of that, but then it looked that way with Ilana, too!! I will not ever trust this author again.

I also thought the big hearing before the emperor went way too fast! This was a major plot point and it was “wham, bam, thank you ma’am” and over in just a few minutes. Again, I felt cheated.

So, overall, I loved this book like the first two, but these two issues were major detractors from my complete enjoyment of the book. Bringing the rating down to 4 stars from 5.

Great Ending for Amalo

I loved every second of this book, it was such a satisfying way to end Thara's time in Amalo. The politics of the city were, literally, killing Thara. But now I know whatever happens for him next, he'll have people cheering him on.

Perfection!

I was nervous to read how the stories of Thara Celehar would conclude, especially after the events of The Grief of Stones, but this is an extremely satisfying finale. Addison continues to deliver unexpected adventure, new companions, and the background tension of political upheaval. It’s a brilliant book!

exactly what I expected, and that is comforting

trying to get all the names straight is a little challenging, but that's really the only complaint I have. The story is engaging, the pacing is good, and the performances on the right side of okay.

Goodbye sweet Celehar!

I have rarely loved a character as much as I love Celehar. Katherine Addison wraps up this trilogy beautifully, revisiting some aspects of the previous two books, as well as bringing him back before the emperor from the wonderful book The Goblin Emperor, where we first meet Celehar. It saddens me to think we may never hear from him again.

Liam Gerrard is perfect as Celehar and voices each of the characters distinctly, but without drawing your attention from the story. Beautifully rendered!

Another excellent book

Really love the cast of characters Addison has created and especially appreciated the friendships between Thara Celehar (who really doesn’t understand how to accept friendship without questioning if he deserves it) and Anora Chanovar and Iäna Pel-Thenhior. My only comment is that I might have done better reading the book than listening to it. The narrator is excellent, but I had a difficult time distinguishing between characters with similar names. I think reading the names on a page would have cemented them better in my brain. Perhaps next time, I’ll toggle back and forth between Audible and Kindle.
