Resumen del Editor

The number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Natchez Burning trilogy returns with an electrifying tale of friendship, betrayal, and shattering secrets that threaten to destroy a small Mississippi town.

When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow.

His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington. More disturbing still, Marshall’s high school sweetheart, Jet, has married into the family of Max Matheson, patriarch of one of the families that rule Bienville through a shadow organization called the Bienville Poker Club.

When archaeologist Buck McKibben is murdered at a construction site, Bienville is thrown into chaos. The ensuing homicide investigation is soon derailed by a second crime that rocks the community to its core. Power broker Max Matheson’s wife has been shot dead in her own bed, and the only other person in it at the time was her husband, Max. Stranger still, Max demands his daughter-in-law, Jet, defend him in court.

As a journalist, Marshall knows all too well how the corrosive power of money and politics can sabotage investigations. Without telling a soul, he joins forces with Jet, who has lived for 15 years at the heart of Max Matheson’s family, and begins digging into both murders. With Jet walking the dangerous road of an inside informer, they soon uncover a web of criminal schemes that undergird the town’s recent success. But these crimes pale in comparison to the secret at the heart of the Matheson family. When those who have remained silent for years dare to speak to Marshall, pressure begins to build like water against a crumbling dam.

Marshall loses friends, family members, and finally, even Jet, for no one in Bienville seems willing to endure the reckoning the Poker Club has long deserved. By the time Marshall grasps the long-buried truth, he would give almost anything not to have to face it.

Trump Hater

I wish writers would leave their political views out of their books. The Trump reference were unnecessary and didn’t fit. Not his best work, but still a good book worth the read

this book brought to you by....

I enjoyed this in general. A bit wordy where it didnt need to be. But I felt like i was listening to commercials for Walmart and Flex. I kept wondering how much the author was paid to throw those names into every single chapter. That, I found annoying.

What a ride!

A great book! Just when the story seemed like it would come to a conclusion it drawed you back in, like a roller coaster.

your get your money's worth

The people who gave this book negative reviews because it was a "Trump-bashing" book are either snowflakes or anything less than the mention of his name without heavenly trumpets is considered treason. There are a handful of single-sentence comments that are not at all offensive - merely descriptive of the times. Like one sentence where he says something about the "Trump craziness" that has kept reporters busy. You could argue that there has always been some level of craziness during all presidencies. This is a really long book and in total he probably mentions Trump's name 5ish times. This book is in no way a political rant. It's a book about apolitical corruption. The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars was the almost pornographic references to sex. He could have been more tasteful because it seemed too crude and out of place.

the monotone and politics are horrific

this book is so monotone you can barely listen to it. On top of that they enter his view of current politics which I don't want to listen to or I would be watching TV.

mixed feelings

I'm still not sure how I feel about this book. The story kept me interested I give it that. I couldn't have NOT finished it because it would have nagged at me to know how it turned out. However... what to say about a story where none of the main characters are likable? The author tries to make the Marshall ( main character) seem noble and a "boy scout" as other characters describe him, but for me.... hes a cheat and a lier who sleeps with his best friends wife and ultimately a sell out.... I'm not sure if the female lead is meant to have us root for her, but I personally found her despicable. One character seemed to have redeeming qualities and yet even she ends up advising "take whatever you can get". The end ties things up in the story but, if you like your story to have a "the bad guys get what's coming ending"... you may be left wanting. Although that is if you can decide who are the bad guys and who if any are the good ones.

Scott Brick is the most pathetic reader I’ve ever heard NBC

Poor Scott Brick! He always sounds as if he’s about to break into sobs. Won’t someone please get the poor scenery away from this guy so he will stop stop stop chomping on it! I don’t know how I managed to get this book into my library. I long ago vowed I would never buy anything read by him again. And here I am, stuck with this stinker.

Could. Not. Stop. Listening!

It’s dark, twisty, sexy, southern, and everything you love to read from Iles. So glad he came out with another one. Hurry up with the next!

This book had so many twist and turns! Great narration by Scott Brick. This was a long book but it kept my interest through out. Little bit of everything!
