Publisher's summary

An uncertain future in a new past.

During the test flight of a prototype faster-than-light craft, Lt. Commander Ky is flung into an ancient past that never existed. Rome has fallen, defeated by the mighty Carthaginian Empire, its survivors chased off the continent and onto what had been the remote province of Britannia.

Hounded by the Carthaginians bent on conquering the known world, Rome is on the verge of destruction. Stranded and alone, except for a tactical AI implanted in his head, Ky has lost everything and must find a way to live in a world different than anything he's ever known.

For Ky to survive, he needs a new home. For the Romans to survive, they need a miracle. But can a man from the future work with people so far in his past, or is this match doomed to failure?

Good, but only half of book.

The whole book prepares for a battle, then stops. Looks like I need to spend another credit to see how it ends. Makes me feel like I'm getting fleeced for credits. If they only give me half of a book, I'm only giving the book half of a rating.

Reignited my love of audiobooks

If you liked John Birmingham's axis of time series, you'll love this. Same problems of adapting advanced technology, social attitudes, economics etc to an past age and all the intersectionality that goes with it. Its excellent. For the first time in months, a book had me riveted from start to finish. I bought it yesterday and I'm grabbing the sequel when I finish this review.

Great book

Very detailed, interesting storylines. Well thought out details and plots. A bit burdensome at times with the detail but that added to the feeling of the story by experiencing the burden that the character must have felt.

Similar to Destiny's Crucible and that's great.

The main character gets transported to a more primitive world and tries to move it forward. This has become a significant sub-genre in sci-fi and is something I very much like. Possibly my favourite sci-fi series of all time (Destiny's Crucible) is like this. The Sword of Jupiter (SOJ) is similar and is very, very good. I like the characters and the plot development.

This sub-genre usually has a strong military theme, as is true of SOJ.

The Safehold series by David Weber is similar and starts out great for the first few novels then goes off the rails. Destroyer and the Lost Regiment series are ok but not great.

If you like this sub-genre, try The Sword of Jupiter Hope the third book in the series appears in Audible soon.

The best book I've listened to since Red Rising

I don't just hand out 5 stars to any book, I think that practice erodes the competency of the review system. If you click on my name you will see I will Hammer a bad book.

This book is exceptional, the characters are well developed, the plot and story are great, and I couldn't wait to get back to the book when I wasn't listening.

I would recommend this book to anyone and be confident that they would feel their credit well spent (I actually already did that twice). So go ahead and get this book, you will love it.

Exciting

Very different take on a time travel adventure. No longer reliant on the past having happened the way it did before he is able to weave a very enjoyable story. Looking forward to the next installment.

Wow, just wow

I usually listen to Sci fi and Isekai type stories but noticed the, future traveller to an alternate past storyline so decided to give it a try. I am more than glad I did. No spoilers, just a really good book, well narrated and am now on to book two.
If this is not your normal book, don't be afraid to give it a try, I doubt you will be disappointed.

New author did well

Book is good but has a few flaws. Narrator is awesome and is cast extremely well here. My only real issue with book 1 is the repeated rhetoric how he can't explain himself due to whatever reason. Aside from that the AI companion is by far the most realistic and unique one I have come across that kept me thinking.
The book does go straight into the deep end which while I feel is a bit of a missed opportunity, but it does a great job at being grounded instead of leaning on tropes/ stereotypes. Makes it feel much closer to reality.

As of now I am nearly done with book 2 which is interesting. Its not a page turner all the way through but it has some good moments in there.

I will check out the narrators other works due to his awesome performance here, and I look forwards to what comes next.

Interestingly different

A really great read. I was disappointed when it finished. The narrator did a great job bringing the characters to life, which can make or break a good story. I will look fwd to Book 2.
