I sure love sci-fi

this is some good honest sci-fi. its the future. there are spaceships, a future war. it's just great sci-fi. listen to it.

Ok Storyline.

This was an ok story. Didn't grab me enough to chase onto the next in the series though. Might go for another someday.

I think the story was very well thought out and just fun to listen to

The characters are well developed for the most part. Though the author does tend to repeat himself a little to often for my taste.

What about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance did you like?

He did a fine job. Characters were well developed and easy to listen to.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, finished it in about 2.5 days.

Any additional comments?

This is a good book. It is not a great master piece by any stretch of the imagination but it is really fun to listen to. I think it is either just below or on the same level as David Webber's Honor Harrington Series. I think weber is a slightly better writer but not by a large degree.

Also while I liked the Ark Royal books I think these ones (at least through the end of book 2) are heads and shoulders over Ark Royal so far as the writing and plot go.

A good blending of Marine Corps tradition and science fiction. A fun romp through a spacefaring future.

Well written and well performed, I'm not sure if I'll finish the series tho as it seems quite lengthy.

Ehhh. Okay, but never grabbed me

Military scfi, a genre that I love, and there are lots of books in this series . . . so I really wanted this to be good. The first book - The Empire Corp - was okay but not great. However, I went ahead and bought and listened to the second book in the series, in the fervent hope that it would get better. Sadly, the second book was weaker than the first. Neither of them were very exciting, and through the first two books, there were no characters who really grabbed me. So that's it for me . . . I'm giving up on the series.

I also need to comment on the narrator, Jeffrey Kafer. He may have been part of my problem with the books. He has a tendency to end each sentence on a down note, draining the tension and excitement out of each sentence. It seemed to make the story a little more boring.

I think it's one of the best Sci fi books I've read it's good at all points of views and gives you a unique sense of emergent. the reason is that alot feels based on real events and real reactions on those events.

Not Ark Royal

Got this one because I've enjoyed the Ark Royal series. This disappointed greatly. Must be an earlier series by this author. The story was okay but the author got military ranks all confused. Majors outranked colonels. The name of the civil guard base changed in the middle of the book. There were editing mistakes. This book needed an editor. Also, the spanking scene was weird and the girl's reaction to it was completely nonsensical. This one needs to go back to the drawing board. I might give the next one in this series a try just to see if it improves.

As for the reader, this gentleman needs to find a new line of work. He mispronounced words. He read the wrong word sometimes, rendering the sentence nonsensical. I had to guess at which word the author meant. His voice inflection was weird. He emphasized the wrong words at the wrong times. He had an odd type of vocal fry where he ended sentences in an extremely choppy manner. It was very annoying. Like this thing was being read by a third grader. For instance, the way he read the phrase "yes, sir" was just weird. Please don't use this reader again.

If you want something good by this author, go read the Ark Royal series. He must've learned something between this crapfest and those books.

I love the Series and Highly recomend it.

If you like military SiFy and other series like the Mike Shepard's -- Kris Longknife and Jack Campell's -- Lost Fleet series's you will like this one. So far the Author has written nine books in the series and Audible has only three of them...

I will quickly pick up all that are added in the future...

Solid Military Sci-Fi

A solid over-all story. Not exceptional but definitely enjoyable. The characters , although not terribly well developed, are like-able. The plot is believable, although fairly simple, and the it's easy to connect with the story, as this book lacks a lot of the crazy technology that sometimes has a tendency to makes Sci-fi a but hard to relate to .

It's a little heavy-handed in it's political messages, and had all that space gone into building up the characters this could have easily been 5 stars.

However, it was a very enjoyable listen, well worth the credit and I will be continuing the series.
