An engineer finds himself in an alternate reality, Cornwall, in the year 715 A.D. He awakens in the body of a young Baron.

Retired Lieutenant General, former head of the Army Corp of Engineers, lies dying at the age of ninety-two. Leading a full life, he is a decorated veteran of World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam.

His love of engineering has him taking university courses his entire life. When his health falters, and he can no longer continue his education, MIT awards him an honorary PhD in Professional Studenting.

After a long illness, he lies dying. His last thought is, "What a waste of such wonderful knowledge."

As he fades to black, the fun begins. He is to build a modern civilization without being burned as a witch!

As evidenced by the 6.5 hr runtime, this is a light series that does not take the time to properly craft character stories and instead jumps right into modern marvel introductions into dark age society. This is fun if you want the instant gratification of imagining the effect such introductions could have on this kind of society and what could have been. This series could have been a new take on A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's court, but falls short in comparison with the lack of character development and a break neck speed of introducing innovations. I wouldn't spend a credit, but the story is worth picking up if on sale.

Light on Story, Quick with Tech Introductions

I have been looking for a story like this and this definitely scratch that itch. The narration took me awhile to get used to since the MC sounds flat but later I realized that this was to differ him from the 8th century people. I love stories stories about using modern knowledge in the past.

If you enjoyed Destiny's Crucible or Long Time Until Now you will enjoy this. I can't wait to listen to the next one in the series!

Just what I was looking for.

The premise is pretty interesting to start with. Guy gets "reincarnated" into a villain and begins to reform an 8th century barony with a hefty dose of modern engineering knowledge.

That being said unless you want to read a story that is 90% technical. There isn't much character development, action, or meaningful character interaction. I enjoyed it for the most part but quit about 40 minutes til the end. I generally like logistics and enjoyed Lightning Regiment and 1632 series but this doesn't have enough action to really keep you interested all the way through, even though it's a short book.

All in all worth the read IF you like more of a first person "history" of how to build up a medieval barony into a more modern era then this is for you. If you like more action and/or character interactions I would suggest 1632 or Lightning Regiment series.

If You Like Logistics This is For You

great story and now I can't wait for the next book to come out. this story felt like the 1632 ring of fire series.

great story with the feel of the 1632 ring of fire.

Seeing the MC utilizing his modern knowledge to improve his territory in the 8th century is viscerally satisfying. The series is well written and highly recommended!

Great series!
