In the grand storytelling style that is his signature, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the very beginnings of the Jewish faith, thousands of years ago. Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle-East conflict.
"A sweeping chronology filled with excitement."

“A sweeping [novel] filled with excitement—pagan ritual, the clash of armies, ancient and modern: the evolving drama of man’s faith.”The Philadelphia Inquirer

“Magnificent . . . a superlative piece of writing both in scope and technique . . . one of the great books of this generation.”San Francisco Call Bulletin

Enduring this audiobook--all 52+ hrs read by Larry.the.robot.--rewards the listener both a sense of personal accomplishment and more than a little sense of empathy for the Jews. For, if you actually complete this journey, you will feel a true sense of kinship with this stiff-necked, peculiar, and enduring people.

Four stars for Michener's rich, intricate, but unnecessarily large tapestry of the Jewish homeland. One star for McKeever's for the best impersonation of a voice synthesizer by a human being I have ever heard. Truly uncanny.

Stiff-necked, robotic, but tediously entertaining

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I bought this for a long car trip. It is a VERY long book! But we could not get past a few chapters after listening to the ponderous performance of the reader who had a peculiar tendency to emphasize consonants in a distracting way. This is very old style audio, and needs to be re recorded. I used to love Michener books, and was really looking forward to this, alas.

Would you be willing to try another book from James A. Michener? Why or why not?

possibly - with a different narrator

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He was impossible to listen to for 54 hours

Do you think The Source needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

this needs a contemporary recording.

Poor Performance makes this Deadly!

I got lost in some places. Wish he had wrote more about the birth of Christ. Still not sure I really understand the Jewish plight.

Historical significance

Would you consider the audio edition of The Source to be better than the print version?

only because I have more knowledge of life. The audio fills in colors and depth of feels I was developing with my own life experiences.

What did you like best about this story?

The way the story wove it's way through the centuries back and forth from the layers to the currant time of the reveal.

Which scene was your favorite?

All of them, especially about the Crusades,It made me realize how little the world and people have truly changed.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The more things change the more they stay the same!

Any additional comments?

Just that the Source, and To Kill a Mockingbird are My Faves in the world!

I first read this book when it first came out.

A brilliant overview of the history of religion and especially Judaism in the upper Galilee. The overarching story is simply brilliant… and so utterly engaging… and the performance on the audiobook is wonderful.

This is an amazing collection of historical fictions that is brilliant
