A psychopath is terrorizing Copenhagen. His calling card is a “chestnut man” - a handmade doll made of matchsticks and two chestnuts - which he leaves at each bloody crime scene. Examining the dolls, forensics makes a shocking discovery - a fingerprint belonging to a young girl, a government minister’s daughter who had been kidnapped and murdered a year ago. Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

Story
This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

Publisher's Summary
"If you liked The Whisper Man, you’ll love this. Alex North has crafted a second novel which is just as gripping as his first and even scarier. Hugely atmospheric and deliciously creepy, it’s about how the past encroaches on the present, and how dreaming influences reality, until in the frightening world of The Shadows, it becomes harder and harder to tell one from the other...and the nightmare takes over." (Alex Michaelides, author of the number one New York Times best seller The Silent Patient)
The haunting new thriller from Alex North, author of the New York Times best seller The Whisper Man
You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile - always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it’s attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet - and inspired more than one copycat.
Paul Adams remembers the case all too well: Crabtree - and his victim - were Paul’s friends. Paul has slowly put his life back together. But now his mother, old and suffering from dementia, has taken a turn for the worse. Though every inch of him resists, it is time to come home.
It's not long before things start to go wrong. Paul learns that Detective Amanda Beck is investigating another copycat that has struck in the nearby town of Featherbank. His mother is distressed, insistent that there's something in the house. And someone is following him. Which reminds him of the most unsettling thing about that awful day 25 years ago.It wasn't just the murder.
It was the fact that afterward, Charlie Crabtree was never seen again....

Iritating
Another one of those books, I was really looking forward to reading. I wasn’t blown away with Alex North’s last book – the Whisper Man, so I am really hoping this one is better. I think I will stop reading reviews because we have very different tastes in books. The ones I like the reviewers hate. So far I am not enjoying this book. And the feeling that the book is a dud continued to the end.

Another winner by Alex North
Following on the heels of "The Whisper Man", North's latest novel "The Shadows" is sure to please and keep fans on the edge of their seat throughout. Much like "TWM", "The Shadows" deals with reconciling the past. There are many ghosts in this novel, literally and figuratively. North balances the procedural narrative and the time-flipping narrative of Paul quite well. The story is easy to follow, and hard to predict. There were several surprises along the way and I was very satisfied with its conclusion. Highly recommended.
Both narrators are perfect. No complaints in that department.

Meh, disappointing
I found the jumping back and forth between the past and present confusing, especially because the narrator was the same. My other complaint is that there are a lot of characters to keep track of and I got confused between them in the end. One last complaint: the pace... slow pace throughout. Not terrible writing, but not my favorite book either. I'd give this ⭐⭐⭐1/2

Better than the Whisper Man
I was pleasantly surprised that North’s second book was much more rich and less superficial than his first book. I thought he followed through with his themes and while describing paranormal subject matter kept on message without going overboard into the esoteric abyss.
