Reese's Book Club Pick | A New York Times best seller!

“An eerie, atmospheric novel that had me completely on the edge of my seat.” (Reese Witherspoon)

“This spine-tingling, atmospheric thriller has it all…and twists you’ll never see coming.” (Richard Osman, New York Times bestselling author of The Thursday Murder Club)

Sarah Pearse's next book, The Retreat, is forthcoming.

You won't want to leave...until you can't.

Half-hidden by forest and overshadowed by threatening peaks, Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. Long plagued by troubling rumors, the former abandoned sanatorium has since been renovated into a five-star minimalist hotel.

An imposing, isolated getaway spot high up in the Swiss Alps is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But Elin's taken time off from her job as a detective, so when her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancée, Laure, invite her to celebrate their engagement at the hotel, Elin really has no reason not to accept.

Arriving in the midst of a threatening storm, Elin immediately feels on edge - there's something about the hotel that makes her nervous. And when they wake the following morning to discover Laure is missing, Elin must trust her instincts if they hope to find her. With the storm closing off all access to the hotel, the longer Laure stays missing, the more the remaining guests start to panic.

Elin is under pressure to find Laure, but no one has realized yet that another woman has gone missing. And she's the only one who could have warned them just how much danger they are all in....

Reseñas de la Crítica

“CHILLING! The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse is an eerie, atmospheric novel that had me completely on the edge of my seat. Let’s set the mood.... You’re in a remote location - at a hotel - and there’s a snowstorm. The winds are howling, the snow is pelting in every direction, there’s a missing person, and a dead body shows up!” (Reese Witherspoon)

“When guests at a five-star resort in the Alps disappear mid-blizzard, vacation’s over for detective Elin Warner. It’s The Shining but with a full house.” (People)

“Creepy, deeply claustrophobic, mind-numbing, teasing, twists and turns galore, this book is a towering example of a masterful hand at work. If only Hitchcock were still around to film it.” (David Baldacci)

The author described the settings and characters in a way that made me feel like I was in the sanitarium. It was very thrilling and captivating as the story unfolded with many many many twists and turns. many times I would gasp out loud in disbelief about where the story was going (a good thing!) highy recommend if you are into thrillers. You will not be able to put this one down!

I was absolutely hooked the entire time! Excellent story made even better by great narration!

Gripping story with fabulous narrator!

The story had potential to become a great book, but the “detective” character was anything but sharp; not even as intelligent and capable of critical thinking as a very average mind. It ruined the whole book.

Could have been a good book!

This was used as our Book Club book for June. I really wanted to like it, esp with the closed circle trope being used. Too many characters made it hard to follow the story, and with over 90 chapters, about 40 of them could’ve been taken out. I can see how this story could’ve been great but the suspense was just a bit on the underwhelming side. The narrator did a fantastic job! Just wish the story could’ve been tightened up and maybe a different villain chosen with a different reason as to why everything happened.

Mundane

They said this was like The Shining, It’s not. It is a basic ‘whodunnit’ with a slew of red herrings and a sad and overused justification for the killer to have killed.
No supernatural angle here at all.
Nothing like Stephen King.
False advertising.
That said, if you want a mystery set in a remote snowy landscape, where yet another police officer/detective tries to solve a case that isn’t actually their case to solve, here you go.

Not as advertised

This book started out promising and very intriguing. The middle 5 hours were very very repetitive almost to a comical level. I felt like I have read this same story 5 times before this book which is my own fault for picking similar books all the time, but it was very cliched and over drawn out. The narration was very well done, however.

So this book had great potential but kind of lost me somewhere in the middle. There were a lot of misdirects that were confusing and unnecessary. By the end they managed to loosely tie up all the ends and reach a somewhat plausible ending. But the epilogue completely confused me all over again. I did finish it but it was a bit of a struggle.

An okay read

I enjoyed the book, but found Ellen the main character unlikable, weak, and a pretty lame PI. It was read well and the story was intriguing. Ellen kind of ruined it for me.

Good plot, poor main character

The book was a bit long. It was also repetitive. The story line was hard to follow and for a detective the main character was terribly unprepared and fragile.

Predictable

Such an easy and fun read. I was captivated from beginning to end. Highly recommended.
