Publisher's summary

Contains books one and two of the Richard Jackson Saga, a coming-of-age adventure series.

The Beginning, book 1

Coming-of-age stories do not have to be full of teenage angst; they can be fun and lighthearted. Follow our young hero as he goes through life in the late 1950s, adventure after adventure, large and small. All you have to remember is that they are all true, give or take a lie or two....

Starting in the summer before his freshman year, the story follows him through his high school life. He finds fame and fortune as an inventor, and wealth in Hollywood as he searches for a girlfriend (...wealth and fame prove far easier to obtain than girls).

The School Days, book 2

Rick in the first semester of the ninth grade. Using the lessons he learned on the road, he makes a serious start on becoming an excellent student. However, he still has to navigate the pitfalls of the Homecoming Dance, Sadie Hawkins Day, and other dangerous encounters with the fair sex. His thoughts of being a football star take him nowhere; he finds that chasing a little white ball around a field can be fun, and that being a hero is not all it is cracked up to be.

I love his series.

I have read, and re-listened to this series, several times, and still enjoy the narrator and the coming of age story. I always get a kick out of the people and Easter eggs that the story presents in this alternate history story.

Meah but enjoyable.

It was hard to finish. Very contrived. Would be a great teen book (ie Judy Bloom for boys).

Effortlessly Excellent

The characters are memorable and engaging, the plot interesting and the narrator perfect for the pace and tone of the book. It reminds me of John Irving in some ways- the acceptance of situations without self pity and a laid back attitude. This book should be more widely known in the UK. Can’t wait to listen to the next in the series.

Suspend your belief

Suspend your belief - its a teenager who does well. Set in 1950s America those of you who are adults may well recognise plenty of books, movies, quotes and ideas.
Even a reference to a famous line often spouted by a Spanish Waiter in England decades later.
I enjoyed the audiobook - and have purchased and partway through third in the series now. That's how much I'm enjoying it.

Take a chance, listen to the book. I think its worth it.
And will happily listen to it again sometime.

Very Enjoyable

This book took a little to get going . Once it did, I had to keep listening. I find this type of writing intriguing and unpredictable.
keep it up. Cheers
