Publisher's Summary

'The most unlikely of people, in the most improbable of circumstances, can become extraordinary.'

The Promises of Giants is an exploration of the practices and behaviours that define transformational leadership. It is a challenge, not only to those in named positions of power but to anyone who aspires to make a difference in their environment. A challenge to act decisively to influence the world in a positive way.

From socio-political chaos and workplace disruption to the climate change crisis, we have never needed people with the skill and will to collaborate to create a better world more than now. We need people who are willing to fill the leadership void. People who will embrace the influence they have. People who believe in improving society and workplace culture - not only because it makes life better, but because it is proven to yield positive results.

We need more leaders.

The Promises of Giants is a challenge to anyone who aspires to make a difference in their environment. Over 14 promises, it seamlessly intertwines personal anecdotes and workplace and social observation with the latest research, to provide practical, proven tips and strategies to empower you to maximise your own potential and inspire others. It is not a self-help book. It is a how-to guide for winning, rooted in the belief that the most unlikely of people, in the most improbable of circumstances, can become extraordinary.

John Amaechi well understands the responsibilities and potential that come with being a giant. The Promises of Giants is the product of a lifetime spent observing and studying effective leadership - from accompanying his mother's visits to her dying patients to competing at the highest levels of professional sport, through two decades of management consulting with multinational corporations. These experiences have shown that everyone has the ability to act decisively to influence the world in a positive way. Everyone is a giant to someone.

Unbelievably powerful

In my exposure to resources on leadership, equity, and self reflection, this particular book, this author, has brings those topics together in an unbelievably powerful and effective way. John is also a fantastic reader of his own work, which makes it even more impactful and engaging. I listen and relisten to elements of this book as I evolve in my own role leading an organization. I'm humbled and greatful for what he shares with the rest of us about life and leadership.

I love John Amaechi

The combination of voice and wisdom is rivalled only by my recent listening to Obama's book. I was introduced John through The Lebatard Show and find him and this book to be a guide leaders should aspire to in work and in life.

Lots of Promises, but worth every one

Masterful storytelling. I was a little skeptical of the number of promises, but It’s hard to stop listening to, and easy to come back to a second (or third) time to really digest.

Sleepy

For some reason people who create audio books, forget about the listeners and provide sleepy audio.

Fantastic

There are so many people I've worked for and with that I want to to buy this for (not to mention younger people that I mentor who I definitely will be buying this for a few of them).

John has an eloquence about how he thinks/communicates that makes me yearn to strive to be like that. I can't even begin to describe in words the value that John's words offer.

(Disclosure as a diehard NBA fan growing up, my high school years, in which my passion for the NBA exploded coincided with John's time in the NBA)

That being said Chapter 14 is absolutely phenomenal (there are NBA elements so super strong epi-effect lol).

From the bottom of my heart, thank you John for not only writing this, but for being you.

Giant Lessons Accessible to Everyone.

We all can be looked at as "Giants".  From our kids, to our parents, to friends and family, each and every one of us plays an incredibly spectacular role to someone else.  Amaechi's book is a positive guide on what we should do about it.

This is…this will impact you. Listening to this expect to grow a few more inches (pun intended)

It’s impossible to engage with this piece (narrative, technical textbook) without coming away with a renewed sense of purpose. Mr Amaechi is in no way preachy. He isn’t judgemental. He isn’t presenting some idealised version of modern living. And yet, there is clearly an ask underpinning this text.

The first thing you’re likely to notice is how approachable this piece is, this has to be one of the best delivered narratives I’ve come across. And that’s important because Mr Amaechi doesn’t skim over any topics. The insights are well thought out, and extremely well presented.

This isn’t my usual kind of reading matter, but I feel greatly enriched by the experience. Yes, I’ll definitely need to sit with this one. It is a call to action, you’ll understand what I mean as you find yourself slowly open up to the underlying story. It’s so well narrated.

Waste of time

So full of himself and resentment at the same time. “Throw bunch of social justice words and complain about stuff”. Its the recipe for this book.

Outstanding!

I didn't know what I would think of this book, John attended the same school as my wife many years ago and she remembered the story of him going to the NBA, she also mentioned that he has written a book and it sounds like the kind of thing I might like. I had a spare credit so thought why not. What a wonderful and fantastic decision. This book is probably the most important book I have read this year, potentially in the last 5 years. compelling enough that I am writing this review (I don't normally do that). compelling enough that on finishing it I am going to start it again, immediately. compelling enough that I want to recommend I to many people in my organisation and compelling enough that I would recommend it to you! John's promises that he ask you make to yourself are profound and are delivered in a heartfelt way, with some very personal and emotional stories to illustrate the point. I found myself captivated from start to finish and I know that this book will influence my work, for the better. Please read this book, if more people read this and take heed of the messages within it, then the world would be a much better place. Thank you John Amaechi.

Inspirational and the best book

I have had this book in hard copy but have failed to read in completion. Downloaded so I could use in my commute to London where I work for NHS. It has helped me to view things differently and feel empowered to be a Giant.

Nicely read, but ....

I listened to 25 minutes and have found nothing new of value to take away, and just a couple of points that I have heard many times before and which in other texts are presented in a minute or so. The part I listened to sounded to me like John talking about himself (and from my perspective how important he is).

I purchased this based on the strong reviews. However, what I have listened to appears to be a different book compared to what those reviews state.

On the plus side, it is very well read.

A must read

With increased interest in Diversity & Inclusion and how this shows up in our organisations, this book offers powerful prompts to help us go beyond surface level D&I initiatives to bring about meaningful and sustained change in our organisations. John challenges us to keep our biases in check, to embrace discomfort, and to challenge the status quo with respect and dignity. Highly recommend!!
