Publisher's Summary

A simple theft leads to unforeseen tragedy in this story from the New York Times best-selling author of the Inspector Ian Rutledge Mysteries.

In a quaint, antiquarian bookshop in the Midlands of England, a woman is captivated by a rare gilt-edged devotional nestled within an exquisite and equally tempting box. Her desire to pilfer it overcomes her scruples, and her guilt and terror at doing something so audacious, so unlike her. With a simple sleight of hand, it's hers.

But this irresistible book of hours isn't in her possession for long. By chance, desire, and cruel twists of fate, it soon falls into the covetous grip of others - from a pickpocket to a schoolboy to a priest - as one woman's transgression sets in motion a dreadful chain of events.

This diabolically clever story from the New York Times best-selling author proves Stephen King was right when he said, "You're going to love Todd."

Well... that was strange...

It was definitely a strange little story. But riveting! I had to listen to it all at one time just to find out what happened next. Excellent narration.

Tale of Theft and Death

I'm a big fan of Charles Todd and his Ian Rutledge series, but this hour-long story didn't hit the spot for me. It's a tale of theft, continual theft, loss, and death, with little to redeem it. I kept waiting for some of the characters to find some meaning or value in the box that had a scripture book inside, but none ever came. It just kept going round and round. It will take a wiser one than me to get this one to add up to anything good.

Entertaining

No, it doesn't have a major plot twist but I enjoyed the little box's journey. I like specially the outcomes of every person who took possession of the little box. I think the stories are well connected and I'm satisfied with the ending, even though some might say it's not conclusive.

A predictable but enjoyable listen

It was a predictable story, but it was a good listen. Makes you wonder what you would do.

Surprise

An allegory, very short, well written, impactful, more a philosophical treatise than mystery or suspense drama…

A brilliant little gem!

What a tour de force in (un)ethical reasoning! A spare, quickly moving journey. Exquisite writing, excellent narration!

Thank you Audible!
