  • The Performance Psychcast - Episode 42 - Motivational Climate and Complex Adaptive Systems - David Smith

    Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the Performance Psychcast. Today we are very fortunate to be speaking with David Smith.

    David is a PhD student in sport/exercise science and sport/exercise psychology at the German Sports University in Cologne. He is a ASP licensed Sport Psychology Professional, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Sports Diversity Leader with an M.Sc in sport/exercise psychology and B.Sc in sport/exercise science. As a sport scientist, David's research focus includes; visuomotor calibration, motivational climate, dynamical systems, diversity/inclusion, LGBTQ+ discrimination and more.

    Professionally, David currently works as a Sport Psychology Consultant for the Pride Cheerleading Association and Vancouver Curling Club - Team Ritchie, Strength and Conditioning coach for FC Düren, TuS Brauweiler Basketball, and SC Janus where he is also the head coach for the “performance group'' competitive swim team. David also works in educational and professional development as the Community Manager for Virtual Sport Psych and as the Managing Editor and Director of Education for Compete Sports Diversity. On top of all that, David hosts his own podcast, “Drag Race Psychology” examining RuPaul’s Drag Race through the lens of sport psychology.

    David is a competitive swimmer himself, having won five medals at the USMS National Championships and 16 medals at the Gay Games, as well as set several national records. He also does amateur videography that he utilizes to develop and promote content centered around inclusive sports, helping inspire people to get involved and discover the social, physical, and mental health benefits of sport. He is a fierce advocate for utilizing sport as a platform to empower authenticity and confidence within his athletes, teams, and communities; achieving this through his work and brand, Stonewall Performance.

    As Greg was unable to make this episode, we invited Kate Walsh to co-host. Kate is a Masters's student of Sport and Exercise Psychology at Bristol, UWE, and her main interests lie in athlete mental health, performance and how the two go hand in hand.

    Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the Performance Psychcast. Today we are very fortunate to welcome back Dr Jonathan Rhodes, who you may remember from Episode 13.

    Jonathan (Jon) Rhodes, is a chartered British psychologist, researcher, lecturer, and performance consultant specialising in cognitive psychology.

    He helped develop Functional Imagery Training by raising performance levels of Olympic athletes, Premiership footballers and teams, business executives, and hundreds of others.

    A co-founder of Imagery Coaching and Lecturer at the University of Plymouth, Jon partnered with the British Army to develop the Pre-Commando Resilience Programme and currently supports the military and corporate organisations with culture change programs. He is the co-author of The Choice Point book available now.

  • The Performance Psychcast - Episode 40 - Sports Officials and Parents as Spectators - Associate Professor Tom Webb and Professor Camilla Knight

    Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the Performance Psychcast. Today we are very fortunate to be speaking with Associate Professor Tom Webb and Professor Camilla Knight.

    Dr Tom Webb is an expert in the global management, leadership, operational environment and working practices of sports officials. Dr Webb has published extensively on sports officials, including two books and over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Tom's research interests concern the role of match officials in sport. Specifically, Tom founded the Referee and Match Official Research Network and has been awarded grants and funding from agencies such as UEFA, the Premier League, World Netball and the European Commission.

    Dr Camilla Knight has been working at Swansea University for the last few years, after completing her BSc and MSc at Loughborough University, and PhD and postdoctoral position at the University of Alberta in Canada. She is also the lead of the Welsh Research Advisory and Evaluation group for the Child Protection in Sport Unit, a member of the Welsh Safeguarding in Sport Strategy Group, and the Youth Sport lead for the Welsh Institute of Performance Science. Camilla's research interests are concerned with understanding and enhancing the psychosocial experiences of children in sport, with a particular focus on the influence of parents.
