Professor Kilmer, a renowned historian of war and diplomacy, is collected from his home and whisked off to Washington. Thrust into the highest levels of government as an adviser to the President, the young historian must come to terms with the seemingly impossible, figure out how to navigate a world where not everything is as it appears, and use all the skills and knowledge he has acquired in his life to help save humanity from a conflict of truly epic proportions.

A genre-breaking novel that re-examines the human condition and masterfully blends some of the most compelling themes in literature: war and peace, strategy and serendipity, love and friendship, courage and fear, the bounds of possibility, and the limits of imagination. Replete with mysteries that will compel you to keep listening, powerful moments that will stop you dead in your tracks, and insights that will change the way you understand and navigate the world. Most of all...a journey you will not forget.

Definitely worth a credit. While it's not one of my favorites, it may get a second listen which says a lot. Character work was just okay, and I really didn't go crazy for any one of them. There was some interesting history to be sure, and some puzzles of a kind really added to the story. If you liked Encounter at Farpoint from Star Trek, you'll probably enjoy this. Well thought out, and well narrated. Don't think you can go wrong.

Sort of an Encounter at Farpoint vibe

Professor Malhotra does an exquisite job of teaching the principles of negotiation, listening to understand, use of history, and leadership in this mind bending encounter with aliens. I recommend this book to every person who aspires to lead through turbulent times.

Excellent use of story to teach timeless truths

With threads of history, philosophy, science and human frailty, this compelling novel weaves a tapestry that will leave the observer gratifyed and dazed.

More than a novel

This book is compelling and imaginative. The negotiations and drama revolving around the earth’s survival were like listening to a real possible strategy meeting at the highest level. The president was also a competent and assertive leader which was refreshing. A story of human nature, love and sacrifice.

Compelling story for the survival of earth

Serioously, and I read a lot. It might not be for everyone, but if you liked "The Martian" (or anything written by Andy Weir), you will like this book. It's fiction, but steeped in science (and science fiction). I read it once and then bought another copy so I could highlight the myriad of passages that I wanted to remember, and then listened to the audiobook, which was also riveting. I could have lived without any of the (even though minor) romance in it, not at all necessary, but that didn't diminish my love and respect for this book. I'd give it more than five stars if I could. My only negative is that I want to read more fiction by the author, and there isn't anything further!

My favorite book
