Publisher's Summary

When retiring isn't an option, it's kill or be killed.

Stacks Fischer is a killer for hire. For more than three decades, he’s loyally served the Syndicate Corporation as its most-feared and respected enforcer around the solar system. He’s buried the company’s dirty laundry six feet deep, no matter who had to be taken out to do it.

Now, Stacks has a problem - he’s losing his mind to incurable form of dementia, and unwittingly spilling corporate secrets in public.

When SynCorp decides Fischer has outlived his usefulness, they decide it's time to permanently retire him. But Stacks isn’t quite ready to go. With every one of SynCorp’s Five Factions gunning for him - and his own mind slowly rebelling - Fischer leads a pack of would-be assassins in a final, deadly chase across the solar system.

The old hit man refuses to fade quietly into oblivion at the hands of his disease or the business he's dedicated his life to. He’s choosing an Optional Retirement Plan.

Don't miss this pulse-pounding science fiction thriller filled with twists that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It's perfect for fans of Titanborn, The Expanse, and Minority Report.

Perfect Narration!

If there ever was a perfect pairing of a character and a narrator, this is it. R. C. Bray does a grumpy, tired, old interplanetary contract killer perfectly. While not a detective story, the book had a definite "film noir" feel to it. Some of the phrases to explain what was happening was just too funny. Finished the book in less than 2 days, loved it, and hopefully there is more Stacks in the future!

A Noir Gut Punch!

Optional Retirement Plan—for starters, weird name, but oddly fitting. Pourteau wrote a powerful story that includes snark, humor, and actual feels. Following a main character with Alzheimers was something I never thought I'd experience and it was done tastefully af. The addition of RC Bray as narrator was awesome, but this story and the writing stands alone. More Stacks!

The Mob on Mars

Chris Pouteau brings us Eugene "Stacks" Fischer, an aging Hitman for a powerful crime boss. R.C. Bray masterfully brings Stacks to life, Bray is one of the best voices of our time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was very entertaining. I've since learned that there are many more books in this universe, some of which may be coming to audible. I am looking forward to more. I highly recommend this book

Rc Bray excellent as always

To be honest I don’t normally listen to this genre but when I saw who the narrator was I decided to give it a try. And I’m glad I did. It was fun book full of action I don’t think I’ve ever listened to audiobook yet narrated by bray that I didn’t enjoy. I came across rc bray has a way of bringing you into the story and actually connecting with the characters. If you enjoy this genre or if you’re just a fan of Bray’s work as I am I definitely recommend giving this story a try. I was given this audio in exchange for honest and fair review.

I. Loved. This. Book.

I knew I would love this book from the description. I had no idea I would love it this much!!!! This is a well-written story told ala "How I Met Your Mother." The main character, Stacks (what a great name!) is telling the story of what happened to him. You don't know until the end who he's speaking to and that big reveal just made an incredibly well-written story even more so. I loved it, loved it, loved it!! Stacks is a great character. He's losing his mind but in his younger days, he was an enforcer for what is basically the mafia. The story is set in the future on a colonized Mars so the bad guys are not mafioso per se. Stacks is a fan and references characters from mafia movies though. He wasn't a good guy but you like him nonetheless. RC Bray was excellent! There were some wonderful syntax and colorful phrases throughout this listen (I hate that I didn't write some of them down!) and they were delivered how only RC Bray can - with grit and a smirk with a sly grin on the side.

Brilliantly Done

Absolutely brilliant! This book is an interesting and perfect blend of action, mystery, humor, and the despair of Alzheimers. I will definitely look for more from this author. As far as RC Bray, well he can narrate an IRS tax debt letter and it would be captivating. Cheers! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A new take on a traditional story

Throughout the story I had to keep reminding myself that the protagonist is a hitman and really doesn’t deserve me feeling bad for him. Of course he has his redeeming qualities and anyone with “old timers” has my sympathy but Stacks is a corporate enforcer protecting a bunch of rich criminals. Solid writing and a great narrator make this an easy choice to pick up. Plenty of ups and downs and a great ending. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Great story and excellent naration

I like the narrator's voice and his voicing of the different characters. The idea behind this book is clever, and in many ways you could set it today rather than in the future. The lead character's physical failings are sadly familiar in the modern world, and the way it plays out here works really well. I've read this author before, but this is my first time with one of his audio books. Both media work well.

A Suprise Gem

Criticisms First Optional Retirement is part of a large series of books. Its slots somehere in the The SynCorp books, but Audible doesnt actually tell you where (Or gives you any indication that technically this is part of a series). You dont need read any of the other books, this one fleshes out the world and charactors brilliantly, but having that knowledge before buying would have been appreciated. Its a stellar book, and I would actually now try others in the series - only problem being I now feel like Ive possibly jumped to far ahead in the SynCorp story Either way, worth a punt

“I’m a whisky priest and it’s a bloodsoaked religion”

I was so disappointed to come to the end of this book. Really well written with plenty of action, mystery and suspense which has you rooting for the antihero throughout! As for narration, well Mr R.C. Bray is a legend of narrating and he doesn’t fail to impress during this reading. Great character voices and has you feeling like you’re right there. Adding the rest of these to my wishlist for sure! This is my honest opinion of a free review copy.

Great story

The element of a deteriorating main character and the issues he faces as he tries to settle a score really gave this story a fresh feeling rather than the same old plotlines being rehashed. RC Bray is his usual fantastic self, cannot fault his performance in bringing the story and characters alive.

Nice find

Picked this purely for the cover art, pleasantly surprised with RC Bray narrating and loved the story to boot. Aging fix it man, to settle things with his rival before his time is up. Loved it.

Surprisingly Good

Got this one for free from Aethon so thanks to them and Rhett C Bruno for the sample. Was a very enjoyable story and was cleverly thought out, little predictable in places but was well told by RC Bray and for free you couldnt beat it! Would definitely buy from this author again!
