The Other End of the Leash shares a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in our four-legged friends.

After all, although humans and dogs share a remarkable relationship that is unique in the animal world, we are still two entirely different species, each shaped by our individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (like wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation.

The Other End of the Leash demonstrates how even the slightest changes in your voice and the way you stand can help your dog understand what you want. Once you start to think about your own behavior from the perspective of your dog, you'll understand why much of what appears to be doggy disobedience is simply a case of miscommunication. Inside you will learn:

  • How to use your voice so that your dog is more likely to do what you ask
  • Why "getting dominance" over your dog is a bad idea
  • Why "rough and tumble primate play" can lead to trouble - and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of trouble
  • How dogs and humans share personality types - and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than "alpha-wannabes!"

In her own insightful, compelling style, Patricia McConnell combines wonderful true stories about people and dogs with a new, accessible scientific perspective on how they should behave around each other. This is a book that strives to help you make the most of life with your dog, and to prevent problems that might arise in that most rewarding of relationships.

Loved this book. I learned so much, but I'll probably listen to it again and again!

I learned so much!

this book helped me to better understand dogs and their Behaviour. and from this understanding I feel that I will be able to train my dogs more appropriately. it's all about their body language and our body language. They are always watching us and we don't even realize it. we speak to them before we even open our mouths. I was fascinated about how much I learned by simply watching our dogs and reading their body language. hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Enjoyable and Informative

If you are interested in learning "Dog" as a second language, then you cannot do better than this book as an introductory text. It explores the similarities and differences in meaning in the body language and intonations of humans and dogs. It gives clues on recognizing the subtle signals sent not just between humans and dogs, but also within both species. The book can improve your relationship with your dog; it can also help you determine the mood and intent of the dogs and humans that you meet.

Excellent, though her constant comments about primates and evolution she could just as well keep to herself since that adds absolutely NOTHING to the book. Other than that, it's an excellent read and very helpful for better understanding and insight into the thoughts and feelings of your K9 companion.

Excellent, except for her theory of evolution.

Great book for any dog owner. It combines the nerdy behavior stuff that makes my geeky heart so happy with easy to understand practical applications for every dog owner. Plus it's filled with a combination of funny, compelling, and heart breaking stories that enthrall any dog lover.
The narrator does a great job and brings a beautiful warmth to the book.

Have you met a dog? Then this is the book for you!

While I mostly agree with positive-only methods of dog training, it is helpful to understand how dogs think and how we normally act around them. That can impact how we socialize and train our dogs.

I won't say this is a dog training book directly. The author shares a lot about her experiences breeding and raising her dogs. In doing so, she shares her expertise in animal behavior especially how to relates to us.

In addition to being an enjoyable story about her life and her dogs, I learned a lot about how we (humans) tend to interact with other animals. In many cases, this is not compatible with how canines work and sometimes it is. It gave me a lot of great ideas that I can use within my own dog training and relationships with my puppies.

Balanced look at dog and human behavior

This book is fantastic. Even if I weren't getting a dog, I would love this book. It is interesting in terms of science and training, and also full of great anecdotes that are story like and well told (and helpful for understanding). This book has poignant moments but also so, so many funny moments. By the end of the book, I had not only learned so much that I will be able to apply, but I also felt like I knew the author and her wonderful dogs. I was also astounded by how great the narration is for this book. One would think that Ellen Archer is the author, as she embodies the spirit of this book perfectly. I look forward to more of McConnell's books, as well as Archer's narrations. I'll be searching for both of them!
