Publisher's summary

Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience!

Essun's missing daughter grows more powerful every day, and her choices may destroy the world in this "magnificent" Hugo Award winner and NYT Notable Book. (NPR)

The season of endings grows darker, as civilization fades into the long cold night.

Essun - once Damaya, once Syenite, now avenger - has found shelter, but not her daughter. Instead there is Alabaster Tenring, destroyer of the world, with a request. But if Essun does what he asks, it would seal the fate of the Stillness forever.

Far away, her daughter Nassun is growing in power - and her choices will break the world.

N. K. Jemisin's award winning trilogy continues in the sequel to The Fifth Season.

Booktrack is an immersive format that pairs traditional audiobook narration to complementary music. The tempo and rhythm of the score are in perfect harmony with the action and characters throughout the audiobook. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration, so listeners can enjoy every minute. When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.

Critic reviews

"Jemisin is now a pillar of speculative fiction, breathtakingly imaginative and narratively bold." (Entertainment Weekly)

"Beyond the meticulous pacing, the thorough character work, and the staggering ambition and revelations of the narration, Jemisin is telling a story of our present, our failures, our actions in the face of repeated trauma, our responses to the heat and pressure of our times. Her accomplishment in this series is tremendous. It pole-vaults over the expectations I had for what epic fantasy should be and stands in magnificent testimony to what it could be." (NPR)

"Jemisin builds off of the strong foundation laid in The Fifth Season ... an interesting new series." (Booklist)

Chefs kiss

I’m loving this series!!! I’m sooo tired of white male authors, this is such a unique idea of a story. This is the kind of fantasy sci-fi shit I love

I am truly loving this series

This has been a great series so far. Something new and fresh. The only thing that’s not as amazing as the story is the background music. I thought it would be some thing a little bit more than what it is.

still good but not as good as the first

I found myself more invested and interested in the characters and plot of the first book. this one dragged a little for me about 75% of the way through. still held my attention, though I had to rewind and relisten in some areas because my mind would wander.

A fabulous continuation of the saga

The great conflict rages though the pawns are only seldom aware. Remember what was missing? Those who are lost can sometimes be found again. Titanic power and petty hatred, love and camaraderie all mix and mingle to give you book 2 of this delightfully original series.

Jemisin's world is detailed, beautiful and horrific while Miles' performance gives you every nuance and inflection of emotion, strategy, intrigue, and revelation.

if you enjoyed book 1 don't hesitate to fall upward into this world yet again.

Really into this series

I enjoyed the first book more. Maybe because I liked the characters better and the creative way you learned about the protagonists life. I love the strength of the female leads. Not sure if I like the added music very much.

Great but not sure how I feel about the background music

Fifth Season Strikes Back

Great narration. Even better sequel. Build on and expands the original without losing the essence which made the first one great.

Original, Creative, Complex

As is usually the case with good trilogies, this second book deepens plot, grows characters, and stretches the boundaries of it’s built world.. It’s a book best read at a slower pace because seemingly minute details tucked into the relentless unrolling plot become critical later. The narrator uses a regal tempo with frequent pauses to enhance the dramatically slow pace of this traumatic epic.
