NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

"Delightful and absorbing." —
The New York Times • "Utterly brilliant." —John Green

One of the New York Times’s 100 Best Books of the 21st Century • One of the Best Books of the Year: The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, TIME, GoodReads, Oprah Daily

From the best-selling author of The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry: On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn’t heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom.

These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. Not even twenty-five years old, Sam and Sadie are brilliant, successful, and rich, but these qualities won’t protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts.

Spanning thirty years, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Venice Beach, California, and lands in between and far beyond, Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow examines the multifarious nature of identity, disability, failure, the redemptive possibilities in play, and above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love.

"Delightful and absorbing...Zevin burns precisely zero calories arguing that game designers are creative artists of the highest order. Instead, she accepts that as a given, and wisely so, for the best of them plainly are...Expansive and entertaining...Dozens of Literary Gamers will cherish the world she’s lovingly conjured. Meanwhile, everyone else will wonder what took them so long to recognize in video games the beauty and drama and pain of human creation."—Tom Bissell, The New York Times

"A tour de force... A moving demonstration of the blended power of fiction and gaming....Zevin describes herself as 'a lifelong gamer.' That level of experience could very well have produced a story of hermetically sealed nostalgia impenetrable to anyone who doesn’t still own a copy of 'Space Invaders.' But instead, she’s written a novel that draws any curious reader into the pioneering days of a vast entertainment industry too often scorned by bookworms. And with the depth and sensitivity of a fine fiction writer, she argues for the abiding appeal of the flickering screen."—Ron Charles, The Washington Post

“Whatever its subject, when a novel is powerful enough, it transports us readers deep into worlds not our own. That's true of Moby Dick, and it's certainly true of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, which renders the process of designing a great video game as enthralling as the pursuit of that great white whale….There are…smart ruminations here about cultural appropriation, given that the game, Ichigo, is inspired by Japanese artist Hokusai's famous painting The Great Wave at Kanagawa….It's a big, beautifully written novel about an underexplored topic, that succeeds in being both serious art and immersive entertainment.”—Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s Fresh Air

Absolutely loved this. Surprised me how much I enjoyed this slow but intriguing story about 2 gamers. The parallels drawn between gaming and real life were spot on, and I’m not a gamer…at all. Loved the characters’ developments and journeys. So unique and creative, and equal parts heart-warming and heart-wrenching.

Unique & creative

It was sure a joy following the friendships in this book. I loved how their creativity and collaborations grow along with them as they move through time. The voice acting was excellent and captivating. I'll look forward to listening to it again!

Zevin masterfully takes the reader on a journey through life, loss and love. Her story delivers a powerful emotional impact. I did not want this book to end. Highly recommend

Astoundingly beautiful

This unusual story of deep friendship & love centers around 3 young gamers. The exquisite narration added to the story, and gave me great insight into my young adult son's interests and thinking process. It definitely reflected the gaming/digital world in which he grew up and still enjoys. The descriptions of the games were detailed and intriguing, without providing too much detail as to become dull for non-gamers. It also reflected modern/Gen Z views on sexuality and gender without being preachy or too graphic. All of that with a truly satisfying ending.

Connected me to my Gen Z child

I bought the hardback version of this book while on a work trip in Boston, after hearing some colleagues signing its praises. I bounced back and forth from book to audiobook, but ended up getting sucked into the audiobook completely.

So many things happened in the book, it felt like an epic tale, spanning decades and lifetimes. The characters were well-developed, and the story was compelling.

This is a book I will read more than once. If only the games they created in the book were real, I'd have already downloaded them.

Just Wonderful

The performance was fantastic and easy to listen to. I felt like a fly on the wall being exposed to a world. I am not a part of, being over 60 and not a gamer at all. Sure, this is a love story. But that’s the least important aspect of this book. For me, it was my exposure to a profession I’m completely unfamiliar with, and I enjoyed the book.

Surprisingly pleased

This was a book I had to push myself through. I am a gamer who loves stories about making games, but I didn’t care for any of the characters.

Monotone Narrator, Plodding Narrative

I loved this story, well crafted from start to finish. It fully expresses the depths of friendship and collaboration and lifts up this type of love. I also learned a lot about videos games in a way that helps me be more kind w my kids. It's also a path for healing trauma, imperfect at times, through friendship and creative endeavors that reminded me of the secret garden or other such childhood classics but for an older audience. One of the best books I listened to this summer.

Well crafted story centering the role of friendship

This isn’t a book about gaming, although the gaming aspect brought back so many memories, even though I’m not a gamer. But I raised kids who were during the time period, and it was so well written. This is a book about relationships, heartache, success, failure - the author created unforgettable characters, I wanted to continue to read about their lives forever and have the book go on and on. The intricate plot, and little throwbacks, the ‘Easter eggs’ of the novel just capture you. Highly recommend, I may need to read it over again and savor each moment! Excellent narration of the audible book!

Loved the story in general and the voice acting was great. For some reason it was so soothing but entertaining at the same time. It kept me relaxed and sucked into the story of the main characters.
