Eleven-year-old Nicholas Vargas thinks his sucky life has been turned upside down. His developer father has remarried and moved his new wife and daughter into his home in the soon-to-be-completed Melgrove Hollow. So, not only has Nick lost his bedroom to his wacko new step-sister, Laurie (who lugs around this huge book about faeries and wishes her name was Lauranathana...C'mon! How lame is that?!), but his father actually wants him to spend time with her.
When an "expedition" to a nearby lake turns up a nixie with a giant problem - and by giant we're talkin' the huge, lumbering, fire-breathing variety - it's up to Nick and Laurie (with the help of Nick's big brother, Julian) to figure out the best way to stop the rampaging beast before all of Mangrove Hollow goes up in smoke!

I do like 2 hour audiobooks since they are easily finished which leads to a sense of accomplishment. These are a followup to the original Spiderwick Chronicle 1-5. I thought the way we lead into these was rather cute and clever. In this book, kids who have the published field guide, encounter some fairy folk and become embroiled in trouble. In an attempt to come up with a solution they even try going to a book signing being done by the authors. It was just sort of cute how the authors become characters in the story about how their last story wasn't fiction at all. At the signing they meet Jared Grace, only to discover he is really Jared something else - his name having been changed for the "book". Of course, you could use this setup to create a zillion sequels, but I still thought it was cleverly done. I enjoyed the characters and liked the story well enough to at least go to part 2 (this has 3 parts).Cute, Clever Followup to Spiderwick Chronicles
