Day One: The Name of the Wind

My name is Kvothe.

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me.

So begins a tale unequaled in fantasy literature - the story of a hero told in his own voice. It is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man’s search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Praise for The Kingkiller Chronicle:

“The best epic fantasy I read last year.... He’s bloody good, this Rothfuss guy.” (George R. R. Martin, New York Times bestselling author of A Song of Ice and Fire)

“Rothfuss has real talent, and his tale of Kvothe is deep and intricate and wondrous.” (Terry Brooks, New York Times bestselling author of Shannara)

"It is a rare and great pleasure to find a fantasist writing...with true music in the words." (Ursula K. Le Guin, award-winning author of Earthsea)

"The characters are real and the magic is true.” (Robin Hobb, New York Times bestselling author of Assassin’s Apprentice)

"Masterful.... There is a beauty to Pat's writing that defies description." (Brandon Sanderson, New York Times bestselling author of Mistborn)

Reseñas editoriales

Why we think it's Essential - When you finish listening to The Name of Wind for the first time, you'll wonder where the hours went. When you listen again (and if you listen to it once, you will want to listen a second time) you'll marvel at the depth and intricacy of the fantasy world that Rothfuss has created. Details that initially seemed irrelevant will show themselves to be keystones of a greater story you didn't even notice the first time around. By the time your finger hovers over the Play button for a third time you'll realize that, to quote George R.R. Martin, "he's bloody good, this Rothfuss guy." --Michael

Reseñas de la Crítica

“The originality of Rothfuss's outstanding debut fantasy, the first of a trilogy, lies less in its unnamed imaginary world than in its precise execution…As absorbing on a second reading as it is on the first, this is the type of assured, rich first novel most writers can only dream of producing. The fantasy world has a new star.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Fantasy readers-a notoriously discerning group-tend to dole out praise judiciously, which makes the reception of The Name of the Wind, the first volume in Patrick Rothfuss's The Kingkiller Chronicle, that much more remarkable. Critics are already throwing around comparisons to some of the biggest names in fantasy, including George R. R. Martin, Tad Williams, the recently deceased Robert Jordan, and even Tolkien. (Bookmarks Magazine)

“New fantasy authors are usually overhyped, and it's rare to find one who writes with such assurance and narrative skill right from the start. I was reminded of Ursula LeGuin, George R. R. Martin, and J. R. R. Tolkien, but never felt that Rothfuss was imitating anyone. Like the writers he clearly admires, he's an old-fashioned storyteller working with traditional elements, but his voice is his own. I haven't been so gripped by a new fantasy series in years. It's certain to become a classic." (Lisa Tuttle, The Times)

Loved it! The beginning was a bit slow but 3 hrs in the story starts to unfold giving one of the best looks at a young wizard growing. No Harry Potter luck but instead a more emotional look at what a young boy who is self aware goes through.

Starts off slow but once it gets going...

A fantastic book! I'm really itching to hear more of Kvothe, his life and the world he lives in. Nick Podehl does a masterful job acting this work to great effect. It is not very often that I'm drawn to read newly minted author's works, but this is one heck of an exception for me. I had heard high praises for this book, but was going to wait a bit to immerse myself in it.. maybe put it off until I heard more about it. Boy am I EVER glad that I didn't wait! Well worth one's time. Well worth it. Kudos, Patrick. I'm eagerly awaiting your next masterpiece.

If you like books by Guy Gavriel Kay or Lois McMaster Bujold, you'll enjoy Rothfus. It doesn't have the thrill a minute action of some or the steamy sex of others, but for brilliant character development and some of the best fantasy prose written, period, give it a try. You'll meet one of the singular characters of fantasy.

The narration is competent, not outstanding but not off-putting. It doesn't get in the way of the superb story.

Brilliant book, competent narration

I just finished The Wise Man's Fear, book two of the series and will probably listen to this again. Skillful fantasy writing left me totally immersed in this world. I absolutely love the way characters evolve with each event and the subtle references to past experiences throughout add humor and act as a bit of comic relief in most situations. I highly recommend this series to everyone!

I'm a fan of epic fantasy and I was beginning to fear that I had already read/listened to the best and the well was running dry...until I started the Name of The Wind.

I'll admit I had doubts when it first started, the narrator sounds very young and the story starts off a little dry. But stick with it because soon you realize that Nick Podehl's narration is perfect for this series and the story itself becomes so engaging you wont want to stop listening. I always know I've found a good series when I find myself talking out loud to the book/characters while listening and when I think about the book throughout the day.

You really get into the main character's (Kvothe) head. I laughed, cried, cringed and went through every emotion with him. He's relatable without being boring. His adventures are fun and thrilling but he's far from your typical fantasy hero.

I highly recommend this book. Please don't let the people who compare it to Harry Potter turn you away. This series is truly unique and I know you'll love Kvothe as much as I do!

Add Kvothe to your list of favorite characters!
