Hadrian Marlowe, a man revered as a hero and despised as a murderer, chronicles his tale in the galaxy-spanning debut of the Sun Eater series, merging the best of space opera and epic fantasy.

It was not his war. On the wrong planet, at the right time, for the best reasons, Hadrian Marlowe started down a path that could only end in fire.

The galaxy remembers him as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives - even the emperor himself - against Imperial orders.

But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world.

Forced to fight as a gladiator and into the intrigues of a foreign planetary court, he will find himself fighting a war he did not start, for an empire he does not love, against an enemy he will never understand.

Empire of Silence was almost great. About 1/3 of the way through I was thinking this was very much like Rothfuss' Name of the Wind and almost as enjoyable. Which is high praise in my opinion. But then it really lags. Its obvious that this story could have used a couple of fine tuning edit drafts.

I very much enjoyed not having the plot in the first part of this story. It was a man trying to find his way in the universe. A survival story. But then the last 1/3 of the story fully set up a plot that felt predictable and tired. I feel that Ruocchio knows where this is going and is telegraphing us the next installments where as an author like Rothfuss keeps the reader completely in the dark as to what will happen next.

I can see where the enthusiastic reviews are coming from. Ruocchio is an author worth paying attention to. I think he has a ton of potential and will look forwards to reading more from him. I just feel that this story left a lot to be desired.

Flirts with greatness

This was just very bland. Not bad but not good either. Disliked the main character. Also the narrator was not doing anything for me and enhanced all the irritating aspects of Hadrian. Hard to distinguish when he was talking to others or himself. I so wanted this to be awesome after seeing so many on booktube praise it. I will give book 2 a chance though.

Bland, overhyped on booktube

This book surprised me with its ability to carry me through so many pages and “lifetimes” of Hadrian Marlowe. I was never bored!

Absolutely satisfying!

The beginning was slow but it picks up. Valkas accent was an odd choice for me but I felt the narrator did a good job otherwise. excited for the next book.

Some pacing issues but really good.

The series has potential. I suspect the proceeding volumes will be significantly better, but this book is extremely uneventful, and the pace is as slow as a molasses.

As I mentioned, this book is to me a 26 hour prologue. It's simply lore and universe building and the repetitive cycle of, father this, mother that, gibson that, wow that did not go as planned, I messed up.

Regardless, I look forward to the next book.

Very good book in conversation with dune It is basically A story in which Choice to kill the younglings Is Who is the correct thing to do (The way Anakin does) This is the pitch as given on the Writers YouTube channel this is an accurate promise Peach

This stood out to me because it is so lifelike, but different enough that it's fun. The story starts as the usual prince setting off on discovery that's comfortable we' ve all read that enough to develop a taste for it. Men make plans and god laughs Hayden begins his story not as some mystical invincible hero but the same awkward and semi competent child we all were. Though good luck bad choices and good storytelling we are brought to a place that is organic enough to be fun without being boring. It's wzards in space but fun and the character development is scary good

This is my second time reading this book and it's even better than before. The narrator does a great job, as always.

Amazing

The back third of the book is a bit of a slog. I can’t say exactly where but it started to feel like a bit of chore especially given this books length. That aside I very much enjoy the world built here and the character of Hadrian is compelling if not in the authors own words a “cliche” and one of the most melodramatic characters put to fiction.

Good book will definitely read the others in the series but
