Publisher's summary

It was the happiest day of her life. Little did she know it was also the last.

When a woman's body is found in the grounds of a ruined priory, Detective Imogen Evans realises she is dealing with a serial killer - a killer whose victims appear to die in a state of bliss, eyes open, smiles forever frozen on their faces.

A few miles away, single dad Ben Hofland believes his fortunes are changing at last. Forced to move back to the sleepy village where he grew up following the breakdown of his marriage, Ben finally finds work. What's more, the bullies who have been terrorising his son, Ollie, disappear. For the first time in months, Ben feels lucky.

But he is unaware that someone is watching him and Ollie. Someone who wants nothing but happiness for Ben.

Happiness...and death.

The Lucky Ones is the terrifying new thriller from the #1 bestselling author of Follow You Home.

Evil deeds

Was a little hard to follow at the end.....who was who, I’m sure if I listened to the last hour again I would get more of it. But since I am a home nurse, getting in and out of the car 10 times a day I get distracted. But I enjoy Mark Edwards books. Maybe it lets the evil part of me come out without hurting anyone. Yes. I said I was a nurse. He he he.

Another Good Story by Edwards

I like every single one of Mark Edwards’ books. I also really like the books he co-wrote with Louise Voss. These kinds of stories are what I enjoy reading most.

This story was a typical Mark Edwards novel- it keeps you on edge and wondering who the killer is. The stories can be a little bit predictable but there were some surprises in this one. The motive for the killings in this story were particularly different/unique, so that gave it some originality. Overall, the book was a good read (hard to put down).

For those who like Edwards, you will definitely enjoy this book. It’s not the best book he’s written, but it’s pretty darn good and I enjoyed it.

Good story, but not special

I listened to several Mark Edwards mystery/thrillers as well as several he coauthored with Louise Voss. Edwards should stick with his coauthored novels because they are much better.

Superb ending

story was a little disjointed. made it hard to follow. eventually the relationship among the characters becomes clear. then there is an unexpected twist. that twist made me give the story two extra stars

Good suspenseful mystery

Enjoyed another Mark Edwards novel. I had it on audio book so missed a couple of chapters in the beginning. I would suggest reading this book as I did not like the narrator AT ALL! Talked too fast and ran sentences together!
But Edwards leaves you hanging until the end as always!

Mark Edward's doesn't disappoint

A little less nuanced than his usual but a really solid read. Mark Edwards is just really good at weaving rich character development and non-cliched creep.

Twisted!

I enjoy all of Mr. Edwards books! I was sure that I knew who the killer(s) were but as usual I was wrong. This was a great read. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Another Edwards Thriller

Unusual plot with several twists. Good development of characters and builds suspense throughout. Narrator was excellent and kept action moving with excitement in voice. Some of the action almost seems unlikely till you hear of some real murders or kidnapping with similar scenarios. I have heard three different books by Edwards and I will hear many more.

Gripping Serial Killer Thriller

Mark Edwards never disappoints. Another fantastic thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat over the two days it took me to listen to this book. I enjoyed all the twists and turns which are what Mark Edwards' fans have come to expect from this very entertaining writer. The story had me hooked from the start, made even better by the excellent narration. Every book I have read by this author has been great in my opinion and this one is no different. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good thriller.

Enjoyable and entertaining

The first chapter drew me in quickly. Story had a good twist on the usual serial killer M.O. although a little unbelievable, it was enjoyable. Narration good, although I kept thinking of Tom Kerridge! Overall liked it enough and want to read more by this Author.

Fast Paced Thriller

I stumbled across the author by accident, and am really pleased I did. The story is fast paced and has multiple layers. It introduces a lot of characters quite quickly and needs full attention. However these characters are interesting and involving. It's a hard to stop listening as you are pulled into this excellent thriller, and to to add to this you have wonderful narration from the brilliant Simon Mattacks.

Compelling!

I really enjoyed this. It is well written, with richly drawn characters, suspense and appropriate twists (rather than seeming contrived). It cries out for a sequel. I expect there will be one.

Great read.

What a great book. Story grips you right from the start. One of those books you can't 'put down' . or in this case 'can't stop listening too. Narrator for me, makes a big difference when listening to a book. The story of many books could well be fantastic but if the speaker talks in mono syllables I can't continue listening. No problem listening to 'The Lucky Ones. ' A big thank you yo all concerned in the making of this audio book. As I'm confined to my bed at the moment due to breaking and dislocating my ankle, this book has kept my mind occupied . couldn't wait to listen to the next exciting installment from my phone. Thank you again .

Could have been a really good book

Lots of books start with an unlikely premise, but if they are well crafted by the author and narrator we're willing to suspend disbelief and allow ourselves to be drawn in. I just didn't find that was the case here. It felt like the narrator wasn't engaged in the story, he just read the words - although he did read the words clearly and came up with variety of voices. The words just lacked sincerity. That was particularly so for the voice of Ben, the main character that we follow in the story. For me, he just wasn't believable.
So, we have a serial killer - the Shropshire viper. He seems to target people who are happy with life and injects them with a morphine overdose. Besides Ben, father of Ollie, our main characters Megan who has recently left them both, also Detective Imogen Evans, recently relocated to Shropshire from London where her promising career had suffered a bit of a set-back. We follow the police collecting clues and putting them together to solve the mystery.
Mark Edwards has written some good suspense thrillers. This wasn't one of his best.

Predictable

It started off as being a story that was not going to be the same old same old. But alas, it became just that. The police here are not brilliant - just stumble from one crisis to the next. The plot "twist" was entirely predictable. I did not enjoy this.

Great Performance, believable characters and story

The story was great, nothing too unbelievable so it kept me engaged and interested. The narration by Simon Mattacks is fantastic, his range of accents is outstanding.....which really brought life to the narrated story.
