Publisher's Summary

Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) was a Scottish novelist who wrote as Mrs. Oliphant. She is best known for her fictional works, historical novels and supernatural tales.

'The Library Window' is a ghost story. A young girl, visiting her aunt in Scotland, finds herself increasingly intrigued by a mysterious window in the house opposite her own favourite window, where she sits to read. There seems to be a local mystery about the window, including a dispute about whether there is even a window there at all. Increasingly this doubt seems odd to the girl as the days go by, as she can see into the room opposite and make out furniture and objects there. Then one day she sees someone in that room....

unbearable narrator

I returned this book after the first two sentences.... because of the narrators unbearable habit of torturing the end of each sentiences final word. How I appreciate Audible's return policy. I am desperate to read Oliphant.... having learnt about her though listening to the exquisite book The Mother Reader.

Reader needs coaching

I love this story, and love Mrs Oliphant’s fluid prose and vivid imagery. The reader of this particular performance has vocal mannerisms that really irritate me. It borders on torture at moments. I’m sticking with it notwithstanding because the writing is so exceptionally good.

what a terrible reader!

The reader is just terrible. Unfortunately this reðally spoils an otherwise great story. I cannot understand this choice of reader.

Terrible performance

The story is great and compelling but the reading is off-putting, with bizarre pronunciation and emphasis that really intrudes on the work.
