Publisher's summary

Aunt Crete has spent a lifetime of toil catering to the needs of her family, especially her waspish sister, Carrie, and social-climbing niece, Louella. When a telegram from a nephew from out west announces his imminent arrival, mother and daughter hasten a trip to the shore to escape the "country cousin" who they are sure will shame them. Aunt Crete is left to welcome him with open arms, and young Donald soon realizes that his loving spinster aunt deserves her own vacation and that his other relatives deserve a comeuppance.

Grace Livingston Hill's update of the Cinderella story features a heroine who lives her life by the Golden Rule and who is justly rewarded.

Cute Story with a Great Moral

I've always liked Grace Livingston Hill books, they are a very light read. They do have the predictable good triumphs over evil aspect, but sometimes I just want to relax with this kind of book. I'm always leery of audio recordings of public domain books because they are usually obtained from Librivox and can sometimes be so bad they are not worth listening to, however this recording is very good. Vocal tone and inflection are just right.

If you are looking for a story where the ignored, seemingly less attractive person transforms into a "beautiful swan" and the bratty teen gets what's coming to her, this is a good book to read.

The best is even better!

This is one of Grace's best stories, a love story of a different kind - so expertly painted with descriptive words and her keen observation of human nature. Add to that the bright splashes of historical details - the toil-worn life Aunt Crete led in the city, compared to the lush luxury of the Traymore hotel, and the Cinderella lifestyle Donald conjured around her there. I didn't think my mental images of this beloved story could be improved by an audiobook reading, but Ann Hancock proved me wrong. Her earnest, perfectly performed adaptation of the story brings each character to life; Crete and Donald and the supporting characters - but especially Luella and Carrie! I'm so glad I purchased this version!

Kindness and humility

I appreciated Anne Hancock’s reading of Aunt Crete’s Emancipation. Grace Livingston Hill has done a skillful job of weaving in several angles of kindness and the freeing of a tender spirit from stifling perceptions, criticism, and bullying. We also see how our perceptions are sometimes misapplied when a pearl is in rags or a wench manipulating. Well worth the listen and taking to heart our own shortcomings to pass on kindness.

Sweet old-fashioned story

I've read many books by Grace Livingston Hill and can't think of one I didn't enjoy. Simple stories of kindness and love of fellowman. Same format "goodness against meanness". Love vs. Dislike.
