"[Narrator Julia] Whelan's performance is unforgettable in this darkly romantic fantasy about one young woman cursed always to be forgotten...Her depiction of the darkness is smooth with a low cadence, capturing listeners' attention and their heart strings." –Booklist

In the vein of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Life After Life, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is New York Times bestselling author V. E. Schwab’s genre-defying tour de force.

A Life No One Will Remember. A Story You Will Never Forget.

France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever—and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

When compiling our list of the best fantasy listening out there, we immediately came up against the age-old question: Is this fantasy or science fiction? The distinction is not as clear as you may think. Dragons, elves, and wizards are definitely fantasy, but what about wizards that also fly space ships? (Looking at you, Star Wars.) For the sake of fantasy purity, the top 100 fantasy listens include the best audio works in all manner of fantasy subgenres.

A genre-bending epic
I’ve been in a continuous cycle of listening ruts throughout the pandemic. It’s become increasingly hard to predict my listening “moods,” and I’ve found, more often than not, that I’m comforted by relistening to old, familiar stories. That being said, V.E. Schwab’s new fantasy checks four of my boxes that remain consistent no matter what havoc the pandemic is wreaking on my listening life: time travel ✅, romance ✅, hidden bookstores ✅, Julia Whelan ✅. I cannot wait to get lost in time with Addie LaRue, and uncover all her secrets. —Katie O., Audible Editor

A love of fantasy and suspension of disbelief are both a requisite for enjoying this story of time travel and shape shifting. And yet, it is as modern as a smart phone. The writing is creative and the characters well developed as the story progresses. It is difficult to describe w/o giving away too much detail. Suffice it to say, that I could hardly stop listening as the unfolding of Addie's life revealed one mysterious detail after another and I could not wait long to learn of the next. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed this story very much, and I loved the ending. Sad, beautiful, and hopeful are only a few words I could use to describe it. Everything comes full circle, and it is masterfully done.

The Narrator was also great, her accents and changes in voice for different characters were very well done.
