From V. E. Schwab, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: a new genre-defying novel about immortality and hunger.

This is a story about hunger.

1532. Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

A young girl grows up wild and wily—her beauty is only outmatched by her dreams of escape. But María knows she can only ever be a prize, or a pawn, in the games played by men. When an alluring stranger offers an alternate path, María makes a desperate choice. She vows to have no regrets.

This is a story about love.

1827. London.

A young woman lives an idyllic but cloistered life on her family’s estate, until a moment of forbidden intimacy sees her shipped off to London. Charlotte’s tender heart and seemingly impossible wishes are swept away by an invitation from a beautiful widow—but the price of freedom is higher than she could have imagined.

This is a story about rage.

2019. Boston.

College was supposed to be her chance to be someone new. That’s why Alice moved halfway across the world, leaving her old life behind. But after an out-of-character one-night stand leaves her questioning her past, her present, and her future, Alice throws herself into the hunt for answers . . . and revenge.

This is a story about life—how it ends, and how it starts.

Critic reviews

"Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil crosses centuries, continents, and cultures to tell the story of three women…. whose afterlives are not what they expected. Vampire fiction the way it should be done, and a compellingly dark companion to the more life-affirming Addie LaRue."—Paste Magazine

"Schwab delicately intertwines the three storylines, which are compelling individually even before the reader knows how they will connect…..A beautiful meditation on queer identity against a supernatural backdrop."—Kirkus Reviews (starred)

"Schwab's fantasies are always a big draw, and this enticing tale of lesbian vampires that crosses centuries [is] irresistible."—Booklist

Editorial Review

What grows when you bury the bones
Some listens just leave you quiet, with nothing but the sound of your heartbeat filling the space. Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil did exactly that. It’s beautiful and painful and so full of longing: for freedom, for love, for a life that feels like your own. Told across three timelines, the story is layered and intimate, with characters whose lives twist around each other in ways that are heartbreaking, brilliant, and just a little toxic (okay, okay, a lot toxic). Self-care looked like not hitting pause—because when I did, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Julia Whelan, Katie Leung, and Marisa Calin bring it all to life with performances that flow together as seamlessly as the stories of María, Charlotte, and Alice. I finished it and just kept thinking: WOW, this is truly something special. —Patty R., Audible Editor

Simply put, this was wonderfully produced and narrated. And the story itself was unique, riveting, beautiful, devastating, and all of the other -ing descriptors that I can’t put into words right now.

Masterfully Produced and Voiced

I've had to really reflect on this book since finishing it before being able to accurately write a review that captures my feelings. Even then .. I'm not nearly as talented at putting my thoughts to words as our verbose Queen, VE Schwab.

I enjoyed every single moment of this book. I was suspicious of Sabine, rooting for Charlotte, and angry with Alice. Now just go ahead and swap those names for me. Nuanced and beautiful characters with incredible, well explored lives and backgrounds. Unique personalities from Lottie's ability to martyr herself to Sabine's fierce desire for life.

Story is 5 stars. Performance is 5 stars. Obsessed with this book, will revisit again. A true masterpiece in sapphic literature. Thank you VE Schwab for this meal, I will be back for more.

deliciously toxic

Initially, I approached this recommendation with some uncertainty. However, given my positive experience with the author's previous work, my expectations should have been higher. The narrative proved to be exceptionally captivating, drawing me in completely. The characters and the plot's intricacies were compelling, and I found myself deeply invested in the story. I was genuinely disappointed when it concluded.

I was hooked

V. E. Schwab never disappoints. This is a sweeping story of 2 women vampires’ lives. There is a lot of violence, loneliness and guilt involved as well as an enormous amount of love, freedom and friendship. This is a beautifully written book with rich detail and justice where it belongs. Such a deeply interesting story that is hard to put down. Also, the audiobook narrators were fabulous.

Quite a saga.

Each of the voiceover actors do really good job. The story is long, but it comes together brilliantly. I don’t usually go in for vampire books, but I am so glad I gave this one a go.

I’m not usually a fan of vampire books, but this was excellent!

I’m so glad I didn’t know much about this book going into it. I had no idea what I was in for, and I love every moment! Such a great audible narration as well.

So sad it’s over!
