NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Passionate advocate for end-of-life care and TikTok star Hadley Vlahos shares moving stories of joy, wisdom, and redemption from her patients’ final moments in this “brilliant” (Zibby Owens, Good Morning America) memoir.

“This extraordinary book helps dispel fear around death and dying—revealing it to be a natural part of our soul’s evolution.”—Laura Lynne Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of Signs and The Light Between Us

Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

Vlahos was raised in a strict religious household, but began questioning her beliefs in high school after the sudden death of a friend. When she got pregnant at nineteen, she was shunned by her community and enrolled herself in nursing school to be able to support herself and her baby. But nursing soon became more than a job: when she focused on palliative care and hospice work, it became a calling.

In The In-Between, Vlahos recounts the most impactful experiences she’s had with the people she’s worked with—from the woman who never once questioned her faith until she was close to death, to the older man seeing visions of his late daughter, to the young patient who laments that she spent too much of her short life worrying about what others thought of her—while also sharing her own fascinating journey.

Written with profound insight, humility, and respect, The In-Between is a heartrending memoir that shows how caring for others can transform a life while also offering wisdom and comfort for those dealing with loss and providing inspiration for how to live now.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Tender and transformative . . . The great surprise of The In-Between is that it makes dying feel like a peaceful, dynamic, and nourishing event that can potentially transform the lives of those who are left behind. Readers will cheer on Hadley Vlahos and, like me, be forever grateful that she wrote this book.”—Christie Tate, New York Times bestselling author of Group

“Vlahos’s compassionate, beautifully written book contains profound wisdom. It is for anyone with an open heart who loves a good story and anyone who fears but would like to better understand hospice and the end of life.”—Katy Butler, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Dying Well

“Gentle and moving, The In-Between takes readers where few think they would want to go: deep into the world of hospice nursing. The combined beauty, faith, and compassion found in each patient’s death is meaningful and sublime.”—Theresa Brown, RN, New York Times bestselling author of The Shift

I absolutely loved this book. As a nurse myself, I’ve had to learn some of these lessons in my own ways. Death is an inevitable part of life that is not easy to talk about. Hadley done a fantastic job at encompassing the death and dying process in a way that only an incredible hospice nurse could’ve. I hope to use of the things she talked about in my own career. I may not work in hospice/home health, but death is everywhere. There’s no escaping it. If I can only touch a fraction of the lives and hearts that she has within her ongoing career, I can call myself a good nurse. I 100% recommend. READ THIS BOOK!!

Brought me to tears!

I work in EMS, a field that has a whole personality around dark humor and just moving on to the next patient. A personality in which I find I don’t fit well. I struggle with dealing with my patients deaths and having to give news to their families. I often struggle with my faith after these moments. Everyone says that it will get easier but I don’t want it to. I don’t want to be in this field if I become insensitive to the life and death I see constantly. I thought I was alone as a health care worker feeling this way. This book, your stories has helped me to see that everything isn’t so black and white and that I am right were I should be. Thank you!

Oh Hadley… no words. I worked with hospice so much in nursing school and am so thankful you are putting it into the world how wonderful and meaningful caring for someone at the end of life can be. I will tell everyone I know about this book. Thank you for sharing these stories. From nurse to nurse- I love that you emphasize the importance of learning everybody’s stories. They don’t teach you that in school, but it is truly the best part of nursing, and being human in general 💜

I never thought a book of deaths could be so heart warming! I was in awe of all the incredible and inexplainable experiences she had. It’s given me so much to think about with how I want to live, die, what comes next, and how to be there for loved ones when their time comes. Hadley is a beautiful writer so vulnerably sharing her past and bringing you into the emotional ride she experienced on this journey. She also painted each of her patients so vividly that I became attached to each one as well. I oddly felt so proud of the nurse she’s become too! Thanks for sharing this book Hadley. It’s one I’ll never forget.

Just blown away!

A must read for everyone, when my grandma was dying I held her hand and thought of the things I had seen the author post in tiktok. Thanks to Hadley I know she had a good death, leaving this earth with her beloved Elvis crooning and without pain.

Hadley is an inspiration that radiates kindness, I look forward to reading anything else she might write in the future.

Hadley found her way to my ‘for you’ page. After watching one of her videos, I was hooked. Then to find out she had written a book based on said videos, well I HAD to check it out.
Once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down. I finished the book in less than 24 hours. It is beautifully written. Being able to hear it told by Hadley herself deepened my feelings for her, her family, and of course, her patients more than I thought possible. I will be recommending The In-Between to all of my friends, and posting to all of my social media accounts.

TikTok made me do it….and I’m so thankful
