Still grieving the death of her husband, Lauren leaves the hubbub of Boston for the peaceful shores of Cape Cod, where she hopes to come to terms with her loss and devote herself to her writing. Historic Holland House, isolated on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, seems like the perfect refuge, until Lauren discovers that she’s not alone, and her ghostly roommate might be none other than Sophie Holland, the mysterious first mistress of the house.

With the help of a handsome doctor with an interest in local history, Lauren is soon drawn out of her self-imposed exile as she sets out to learn what happened to Sophie and stumbles onto a story worth writing about.

the narration left much to be desired. Speaking the voice of the child wasn't very good.

I like the storline

I enjoyed the book, but it's a stretch to call it a ghost story. There was very little in the way of haunting. Not scary in the paranormal sense.

Interesting story but not what I call a ghost story

I loved this book! I love books that grab you right from the start and this one did. The book goes back and forth between two women. One woman, Sophie, is living in the 1800s and the other woman, Lauren, living in the present, is writing a book about Sophie (the ghost) in the Cape Cod house that Lauren is renting. If you're looking for a book about the scary, supernatural, this is not it and I'm glad it was not! Instead, it is a wonderful story (page-turner) about how these two women's lives intertwine. Read it. You will not be disappointed!

Page turner

Great prose and (internal) dialogue. Always a satisfying ending (thank you). Sometimes a little drawn out, but still highly engaging.

Well done!

Another wonderful story by Irina Shapiro who is able to weave two stories together seamlessly and capture the listener and draw them into the tales centuries apart. You feel as if you are there in both time periods through Ms Shapiro’s ability to evoke emotion and a visceral connection to the characters... a must read and enjoy!

Good story line, but narrator's male character voices all sound apathetic and offhand/nonchalant, skewing my perception of their intentions throughout the book.

The only thing I disliked was the way Sophie whines so much. I found that tedious. But overall, this is an excellent and fun read.

Really excellent story

The voice seemed to be that of a ghost 100 % of the time.
Her rendition of the male characters was weird; didn’t care for it.

Great love story both present and in the past. The ghost facilitates the story by her presence. Find out how Teddie and Sophie pave the way for Loren and Ryan.

Loved it
