Publisher's Summary

Gillian Flynn's Edgar Award-winning homage to the classic ghost story, published for the first time as a standalone.

A canny young woman is struggling to survive by perpetrating various levels of mostly harmless fraud. On a rainy April morning, she is reading auras at Spiritual Palms when Susan Burke walks in. A keen observer of human behavior, our unnamed narrator immediately diagnoses beautiful, rich Susan as an unhappy woman eager to give her lovely life a drama injection. However, when the "psychic" visits the eerie Victorian home that has been the source of Susan's terror and grief, she realizes she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts anymore. Miles, Susan's teenage stepson, doesn't help matters with his disturbing manner and grisly imagination. The three are soon locked in a chilling battle to discover where the evil truly lurks and what, if anything, can be done to escape it.

The Grownup, which originally appeared as What Do You Do? in George R. R. Martin's Rogues anthology, proves once again that Gillian Flynn is one of the world's most original and skilled voices in fiction.

Critic Reviews

"Julia Whelan narrates this ghost story with insight, depth, and passion.... As she skillfully merges the deceptive characters, a haunting tone, and compelling events, the audiobook doesn't need mood music. Whelan can raise goosebumps and keep listeners on the edge of their seats all by herself." (AudioFile)

The Grownup

Too short to get my attention. I have read Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, Sharp Objects and Dark Images, which were all great reads -- so I was expecting more'

Not long enough

The first fifteen minutes of this novel are hilarious. I literally laughed out loud as I walked to the office. Then it turns dark and creepy (in a good way, as Flynn knows to do). However, the story is simply not long enough. It peaks...and it's over. Leaving you wanting more. I can't wait for her next real novel.

Disappointed

I thought that this was a full length novel or I would never have wasted the $15 audible credit on it.

Did I just pay $10 for a short story?

I’ve been very satisfied until now. This is like a tease!
Not worth the money or the point!

No real ending...

totally bland. Totally bagging readers on that she is the author of Gone Girl. Storyline had potential but then got real weird and hard to follow.

UNBELIEVABLE THEY CHARGED A CREDIT FOR THIS!

Would you try another book from Gillian Flynn and/or Julia Whelan?

I loved gone girl but this was a HUGE letdown. Note that it last a little over an hour. There is just no there there!

Well written, ok story

I enjoy Gillian Flynn's work mostly because of her writing style: intelligent, real, with a stand-out talent for prose and subtle humor. The writing in this story hooked me from the first sentence, but the story failed to grab me. An interesting character study devolves quickly into dull mystery and murder for murder's sake. The reader is supposed to be horrified, and the "twist" is suppose to catch one off guard -- but is as predictable as can be. I am always a fan of this author -- but this short story could use some work.
