Publisher's summary

A detective is forced to confront the demons of her past while investigating the death of an old friend in the first novel of Chris Culver’s gripping Joe Court Series.

Detective Mary Joe Court sleeps with a shotgun beside her bed and a lovable bull mastiff at her feet. For the past 12 years, she’s hidden from a nightmarish past, but with every passing day, her scars fade, and her heart grows lighter. Now, for the first time in her life, she looks forward to her future. She’s happy.

Then she finds the body.

Someone shot the victim in her chest and left her to die in a cheap motel. Joe knew her well. She grew up with her. They were sisters, of a sort.

Twelve years ago, the victim put a gangster in prison. Now that gangster’s out, and he’s looking to settle scores - Joe included. Joe has fought to leave her past behind. Now, she has to face it or lose everything she cares about. Because the killer hunting her will tear apart her carefully constructed life piece by piece until there’s nothing left.

Unless Joe gets him first.

Great Mystery

The Work starts out slow, but once the action starts you won’t be able to put it down.

Disappointed

I really enjoyed this book and, as I was listening, was thinking how much I would enjoy the rest of books in the series.
BUT AUDIBLE ONLY HAS ONE BOOK!!! You’ll have to resort to “old school” and READ the rest of the books in the series.

A good story. Not your typical police stirrup

The premise is okay. Definitely a different approach to a police/murder case
Unfortunately like so many authors, the same background story keeps being repeated over and over again. It adds nothing to the story and after awhile because annoying.
Since the basic story is good, I endured the repetition and managed to get through the entire book. A little bit of a surprise ending.

Be Consistent!

Ever since I discovered audible books, I don’t sit down and read anymore. I just listen when driving, doing chores or walking the dog. I really don’t appreciate or understand why, when books come in series form, that the first book would be in audio form, but the rest of the books in the series are not. You are losing sales by doing this! I really want to continue the series but not enough to read them. This is not the first time I’ve encountered this problem.

This is the only audiobook in this series

Book was great but I didn't realize before hand that this was the only one in the series that had been audiobook'd so I am returning it so I can listen to something else.

More Chris Culver, please

I have gotten bored with most of the female detectives I enjoyed in the past — Tracey has become dull, Kim is just too bitchy, Joanne has run her course and on and on. Joe Short could be my new favorite but i am sorry to see this is the only audiobook adaptation of Chris Culver’s work. Kindle is always good but I can’t read while running or handling routine chores. Hope to see more Culver audios in the future.

Girl in the motel

Enjoyed the story. Kept you wondering what was going to happen next. Listened to if in one setting couldn't put it down.

Fast Read…Engaging Character

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This author is new to me, but I’ll definitely read more of his books in the future. I look forward to the rest of this series being offered on Audible!
