Resumen del Editor

August Snow, an ex-police detective who was fired from the Detroit PD, brought down the entire corrupt department and the mayor with a wrongful dismissal lawsuit. The son of an African American cop and a Mexican American painter, August Snow is most at home in Detroit's Mexicantown neighborhood, where he grew up - the neighborhood he's now returned to and hopes to revitalize with his settlement money of $12 million. The trouble is August has old enemies with scores to settle.

When an old acquaintance, finance magnate Eleanore Paget, hears August is back in town, she tries to hire him to investigate suspicious goings-on at her investment bank. August declines - detective work is no longer his beat. When Eleanore is found dead the next day of an apparent suicide, August doesn't buy it for a minute. His search for her killer will drag him into a rat's nest of Detroit's most dangerous criminals.

Exceptional Read!

What a great story, although I would have rather that August had a little less angst! So much loss ! Made his character much too emotionally burdened at times. Looking forward to Book #2. Maybe his personal life gets better!

interesting.

Agree with one reviewer who said this read like a movie. Which is what bothered me through much of it. That aside; found it reasonably good, with very likable characters being my favorite part. Not sure yet if am going on with series.

Extremely well written

Descriptions very believable, characters briefly but well drawn. Suspenseful with quick action. I thouroughly enjoyed it.

Better than the description

From the description of this book, I couldn't tell where or when the setting was and I procrastinated reading it thinking it was a historical crime novel.
It is modern day Detroit, with a very likable mixed-race PI who used to work for the police department, then got a big settlement from the city so he doesn't have to work (or take crap from anyone). He is as dedicated to his community as he is to solving the crime. The book is smart, well-written, and wrapped up all loose ends. I can't wait to read the next August Snow book.

great story line, bit too much a Detroit woes

I have lived in Detroit for 33 years and have friends born and raised in Mexican town oh, so I look forward to a book in which the city of Detroit and Mexican Town played a prominent role. there was plenty of both in the book, a lot of social commentary about white flight, and sometimes it felt admit too much. towards middle through end of the book everything balances out and the main story dominates. I am looking forward to read the next book in the series.

Great story

August Snow was a total treat and now I am officially apart of the Stephen Mack Jones fan club. Although the subject matter was dark, Snow’s dry wit and cool character made for an equal balance. What I liked best about Snow was that he saw the best in people, even when they did not see it in themselves. Snow didn’t say, I wished I could have done more, he did more. The book read like a movie where you could picture each scene, the action, characters, writing and pacing well done. I’m looking forward to reading the further adventures of August Snow. Luis Moreno did an outstanding job with the narration which complimented the story perfectly.

yes and now

The characters of August Snow, his neighbors and friends are faceted both humorous and loving at times and violent at others. The villains are simply villainous.
The violence throughout is painful to read, or was for me though I can see that people of color are so mistreated by police and much of the white population that it's no wonder that the residents of inner city Detroit resort to vigilanteism, as what other protection have they? This first book could have been a bit shorter, sometimes the same drumbeat played too many times, though I must say the descriptions of Detroit and Michigan were fascinating and the pithy comments on white society apt and bitterly amusing to this reader of European descent, as well as very very sad. I will wait awhile and then read on as Stephen Mack Jones is clever and talented
