Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Not what I expected, but still good.
I got this off of recommendation wanting some J-Horror in audiobook form, as that's one of my favorite types of horror movie, and someone online pointed me to this book. It's not what I expected in the sense it is J-Horror themed, but it's not really scary. It's from the perspective of the ghost, rather than the humans most of the time, and while scary things happen, knowing the ghost's motives and hearing their narrative, and what their reasoning for their actions is mitigates the fear really and all but eliminates it. It was still good though, but it is aimed at teens a bit more than adults really. The narrator I see a few people disliking, but I feel as though she did a good job for the character. The character is supposed to be indifferent and monotone, lacking emotion. The narrator did her justice, and the other characters who have emotions have emotion to their voices, so it seems to be done with intention, I liked the narrator due to giving all characters their own spin on a personality through voice. It's really an adventure story with horror elements, but it's cool to see the other side of the story, so I grabbed the sequel as well, hoping to continue the adventure.

Love it
I've been looking far a good ghost story and fell in love after stumbling across this book. the Narrator did an amazing job in my opinion and read in a way I could picture the ghost would speak if she were around to tell the story herself. Loved this book I have a paperback copy as well as the audio can't wait to read and listen again

Good not great, Stuggled to connect w/ characters
Characters just never felt fully developed.
The narrator's flat delivery, in spirit with the character, further exasperated the slow and deliberate pace of the book that never fully payed off. I finished the book but if I wasn't paying attention to chunks of the book I didn't bother to go back and catch up. Just never was able to fully invest in the story or characters

Narration Fell Short
I would have enjoyed this book more if I had read it myself.
The narrator was good, but overall her voice was too calm, too soothing for a horror novel. I know this is partly because she was narrating through the eyes of a 300-year-old ghost who - I'm sure - would typically be unbothered by most of what is going on in the living world. But it was just.... odd. And anti-climatic. Imagine getting to the exciting climax, and the narrator calmly says things like "the roof caved in" and "she cries out as the demon approaches". IT'S BIZZARE.
Overall, the narrator was FAR too monotone for a book that was about demons, possessions, exorcisms, and murderers. But again, it's hard to blame the narrator when she's speaking as a phantom... but still.

It’s fine.
The story is fine. Promising start but overall didn’t do a lot to explain the “why.” Fine if you prefer an experience over a story. The narrator did a decent job but I feel like they could have gotten someone with an understanding of the Japanese language considering half of the story takes place in Japan.

Love the story… The performance, I love less…
Love love love the story…but the performance unfortunately sounds like the Google maps reader…

Interesting horror story
It was an interesting step back form the monster hunting down people but the ghost as the protagonist was very cool to see!

The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

Story
Micheline Helsing is a tetrachromat - a girl who sees the auras of the undead in a prismatic spectrum. As one of the last descendants of the Van Helsing lineage, she has trained since childhood to destroy monsters both corporeal and spiritual. The corporeal undead go down by the bullet, the spiritual undead by the lens. With an analog SLR camera as her best weapon, Micheline exorcises ghosts by capturing their spiritual energy on film.
