From the New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Marriage

From New York Times bestselling author, Jeneva Rose, comes a fully updated and expanded edition of THE GIRL I WAS, the first book she ever wrote, featuring six brand-new chapters from a fresh point-of-view.

“If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.”

Alexis Spencer will use any inspirational quote to rationalize her failures and shortcomings. Her closest friends are a distant memory, and her college debt is still as high as the day she left. But that’s all fine and dandy, because “whatever will be, will be.

However, when Alexis loses her job and her relationship on the same day, there’s no quote strong enough to get her through that. In typical fashion, she blames the world for her problems, including her younger self, who should have tried harder.

Feeling sorry for herself, Alexis finds a bottle of vodka from her college days and goes on a bender, blacking out in the process. Only this time, she doesn’t wake up at home, or in the right city. In fact, she isn’t even in the right year.

Alexis is back in her college town in the year 2002.

Convinced this is her chance to do things over, she heads to her dorm—and comes face-to-face with her eighteen-year-old unruly self, who goes by Lexi because it’s “sexier.” Getting acclimated to life in the early 2000s is the easy part. Dealing with Lexi is where things prove difficult.

They might be the same person, but they couldn’t be more different from one another. Now Alexis and Lexi must learn to get along and come to terms with the fact that alone, they will never make things right, but together, they could change their life for the better.

Such a great listen, I was a little annoyed at the story line and though this is not going to be as good however I was wrong. The challenge of having met your old self and experiencing stuff again as an older version of yourself. I loved it. Great ending, great storyline.

Love it

I actually enjoyed listening to this book because im in my 30s battling if I only could go back to the younger version of myself and change some things. So this book was spot on. Healing is all I can say

Distinguishing between the two versions of herself was sometimes confusing, I could only stay focused if I kept reading, not if I set the book down. Overall great story and message!

Somehow, I must’ve forgotten that I listened to this book before and it slowly came back to me. It was an excellent story and I love stories about time travel. I cried. The part that bothered me that I would change if I were the author, is anyone who had the ability to go back in time and knew that their parent was going to die, would do something to change that outcome. The fact that the main character didn’t warn her mom about her impending heart attack literally hurts me, and it hits close to home because my father died unexpectedly of heart attack and what I wouldn’t give to be able to go back and change that outcome……

Back in time

I absolutely love Jeneva Rose—she pulled me in with her gripping thrillers, but The Girl I Was shows a completely different side of her storytelling talent. This book isn’t a thriller—it’s a heartwarming, thought-provoking, and emotionally rich story about self-reflection, growth, and second chances.

The story explores the idea of going back in time and facing the person you used to be. What would you say to your younger self? What would you change if you had the chance? And more importantly—would those changes really lead to a better life? These are the kinds of questions this novel poses in such a relatable, emotional way that it really made me pause and think about my own journey.

Jeneva Rose delivers a beautifully written and uplifting narrative that’s full of introspection and hope. It’s a lovely reminder that healing and growth come with time—and that the person we are today is shaped by everything we’ve lived through.

Thank you, Jeneva Rose, for giving us this moving and meaningful story. The Girl I Was is a standout novel that proves she’s not just a master of thrillers—she can write with heart and depth too. Highly recommend!

Book Review: The Girl I Was by Jeneva Rose

I just finished, and wow—what a read! I experienced it on audiobook, and I’m so glad I did. The narration brought the story to life, but honestly, this book would be an easy and enjoyable read in any format.

What stood out to me most were the characters. They felt so full of life, so real, that I often caught myself thinking, wait, are they talking about me? As someone born in the 1990s, the nostalgia was spot on—little details and experiences that instantly transported me back and made the book incredibly relatable.

The character growth in Alexis and Lexi was beautifully done. Even though they’re technically the same person, we get to see them at two different stages of life, each growing and evolving in her own way. Watching that parallel journey was powerful and made me reflect on my own life. I’m a sucker for “travel back in time” stories, and this book hit the mark perfectly. It captures that yearning we sometimes have to redo moments from the past, while also reminding us that our mistakes shape who we are and that change is always possible—it’s a mindset.

One of my favorite parts was when the story touched on Alexis’s relationship with her brother. It was written so realistically that I could see my own family in those moments. Jeneva has a gift for writing characters that feel like people you know.

This was such a refreshing read: quick, engaging, heartfelt, and deeply relatable. I have nothing negative to say about it. It’s the kind of book I would reread and definitely recommend to anyone looking for a story that blends nostalgia, personal growth, and a touch of time-travel magic. She did an excellent job with this one.
