Publisher's summary

Something is very wrong with the Fitzwilliam estate . . .

It was supposed to be a regular seance job.

But from the minute I met an angry ghost in the hall, I knew there wasn't going to be anything ordinary about this house or its dead residents. First of all, there were way too many of them. Second, some of them had been helped along from living to dead. Third, my attempt to figure out what was going on got a bit sidetracked when I met the gardener.

He was tall, dark green, and handsome.

And really, really smart. So I hired him to help me figure out what was going on. And that's when things got interesting, in more ways than one.

I think I'm falling for an orc, and that's making it really hard to concentrate on doing my job, but if I don't, I'm going to be in a whole heap of trouble.

Contains mature themes.

I love this series!

I’ve already read pretty much all of the books, but I’m so excited to find these in audiobook format. The narrator is one I haven’t heard before, but he does a great job and bringing the characters to life with different voices for different characters.

Fun & Touching

Loved the story and the performance! It's a lovely combination of fantasy, romance, and silliness. There are some surprisingly intense subjects covered in skilfully crafted ways.

Interesting new verse

This story was very enjoyable, and it is a very different verse for me. I quite enjoyed the explanation for all of the various Arcanid types. Of course my favorite part is the ghosties, which is always a fun supernatural element.

The narrator did an amazing job of bringing the characters to life, great choice by the author!

Love the series!

I’ve read all the books so I knew the audiobook would be good. The narrator is new-to-me and has a great voice. He does good with the different characters and keeps my attention.
This is the first book in the series and introduces you to Ward and Mason. The world building is excellent, the way the author uses a virus to explain the different races and abilities is a nice change from other books I’ve read.
Overall a great book and a series that I have recommended to others.

A long time favorite!

This book is such a breath of fresh air! I've loved the written version for a long time and re-read it several times. The world-building is incredibly fun, and I adore Ward and Mason, the protagonists. Ward is angsty but endearing, and neither of them are too perfect, which I always prefer. I also appreciate an author who isn't afraid to discuss different viewpoints and moralities, and really engage with tough issues. This book isn't 100% perfect in that regard, but it's the beginning of several books that show the author's increasing skill at delving into tough conversations. It's one of those books that manages to deliver on the drama and high stakes, while somehow also remaining really sweet (and spicy, so don't get surprised).

Audiobook-wise, I admit I didn't love the narrator quite as much as I was hoping. Some of the characters felt little bit cartoonish, which doesn't make sense for subsequent books, and doesn't allow the reader to feel the tone and quality of the writing quite as well. The majority works, though, with many clever narration moments, and I still think it's worth the time and credit. Hopefully, that effect is eased somewhat in subsequent books! Either way, words on a page, or listened to, I encourage readers to try this one out!

Interesting but…

The story starts out well but goes off track along the way. The main plot of the story is interesting but it’s like the author wanted to add length to the story and includes several chapters that have little to nothing to do with the main plot. When the story finally gets back around to the main plot and to the climax between the protagonist and antagonist, it just cuts to the protagonist waking up in the hospital with a short explanation of what happened. It’s extremely anti-climactic and disappointing. The story starts with so much potential but it doesn’t live up to its potential. As for the narrator, he does okay with the human character voices but all the voices of the “non-human” characters sound like cartoon characters which was annoying. I wanted to like the book but it ultimately failed to impress. I highly doubt I will continue the series.

Way too much graphic sex

The underlying story is entertaining, however the graphic inactions between the two primary characters does not add anything to the story. In fact it is a total disruption to the narrative.
