Publisher's summary

The war is over, and the Mortal Realms have all but fallen to Chaos....

Korghos Khul rampages across the fiery Realm of Aqshy, hunting down mortal kind to slaughter or subjugate to Khorne. His Goretide have crushed all resistance...until the storm.

From the heavens hurtle paladins clad in gold. Sent by Sigmar, the Stormcast Eternals have come to liberate all the realms from the yoke of Chaos. Their leader is Vandus Hammerhand, Lord-Celestant of the Hammers of Sigmar.

After a long age of darkness, there is hope. Vandus must open the Gates of Azyr to unleash Sigmar's righteous fury against the damned. Everything depends on his victory.

A Short Intro into Age of Sigmar

The book is good story wise, but the run time of 3.5 hours is much less than the other Realmgate Wars books for the same price.

reboots are tough

a reboot for a franchise like warhammer fantasy will always be a hard undertaking. The fight scenes are good, the character development is ok. But the biggest negative is the worldbuilding. all we really get is "oh yeah, chaos destroyed everything". fair enough, but where are we, where is Azyr, or akshi? are we in the physical world in this scene or the warp?

More action than story

Short and a good introduction to Age of Sigmar, although the story was mostly battles.

good but...

the narrator does a superb job, best I've heard. the story itself has great imagery and writing but it's lacking in real depth and it's incredibly short for the cost.

The beginning of Age of Sigmar

Gates of Azyr is a good start to the Age of Sigmar storyline. It has its faults but is still a great story. At such an early stage in the storyline, the Stormcast Eternals aren’t fully developed as individual characterizations but this isn’t telling of the author. Chris Wraight is easily one of Black Libraries top authors and he does the best he can with hands slightly tied. Definitely worth reading if you are interested in Age of Sigmar.

A short and sweet introduction to Age of Sigmar

While I expected more for the price, this is a great hopping in point for people new to the franchise.

Awesome!

I absolutely love the way the narrator did the characters voices. It puts you right in the battle and never got bored. Well done!

Entering a new world

The novella does a good job of entering into the world of Age of Sigmar, and the voice work is excellent

A good entry point for Age of Sigmar new comers

It's the Age of Sigmar starter set but told through a story and it sets up the universe for further tales.

Great introduction but maybe not the best book

I was just a little disappointed to find the Stormcast et al so flat after coming from Plaguegarden - some broader world building was nice to take in but I felt it lacked the depth of the titles I have just spun through, and I accept that was going backwards!

Whilst giving it his all, the narrator was not the easiest listening of an evening, which is no criticism. It just didn't combine for me.

Get into AOS

This is a great way to get into AOS, however it's not a complete story, you need to read war storm to get the "true" closure of this book.

Dave D

I love the way we go from the age of chaos into age of sigmar.

There’s a great start with creation of stormcast eternals. The description is awesome.

Iove vandus hammerhand

I feel stormcast are the Jedi knights of age of sigmar.

Sigmars lightning power is amazing.

Good Story

I really enjoyed this book and the narrator was brilliant, this gave me a more indepth knowledge into the beginning of The Age Of Sigmar. Great book for anyone just getting into the lore.

Very Poor story

I desperately wanted to like this. I loved the Old World Narrative and Background of original Warhammer. I felt I owed it to Games Workshop to try their new creation out, but after this novel which was just sword and hammer porn with no real story telling, I'm left thoroughly disappointed.

Jonathan Keeble was as good as usual. He made the best of what he was given.

definitely the Warhammer theme but not warhammer

Cool story but it's like the soft rock brother compared to the heavy metal that is Warhammer.

Not bad but not mind blowing.

Very short for the cost. Lacklustre after Soul Wars but good to have Vandus staring. violence was a major focus so best for mature listeners.

The first of what is a great series.

I didn't find this that great.
However if you continue it becomes an amazing series that really breaths life into the Age of Sigmar universe.
You could probably pass this one, however it does introduce a key character and villain so probably recommended to start here.
