starts elegantly, ends as bad as it gets

The book opens elegantly, witty and smart. It's mysterious and riddle like. Then in some point it seems that a different author takes place - a 14 years old teenagers that turns the book into Marines vs bug prople. And the book goes to toilet.

Good story, a tad bit predictable. And the stupidity of all but one of the characters gets old very quickly.

Sheer Brilliance!

Peter Clines has done it again with an incredibly out-of-the-box story that is part sci-fi and part sheer insanity. Set in the same world as "14" this book definitely has a similar feel but goes beyond it in several key ways. It strongly retains the "Twilight Zone" feel of the previous book, and the way he pulls it off is real genius. The story starts with a bang of a prologue, then steps back into the seemingly ordinary world and then builds it back up to the point where you just can't put it down.

One of the best parts of this book is the main character of Mike. He's something like a savant - he combines extremely high intellect with a perfect photographic memory. Using a character like this as an investigator of sorts was a stroke of sheer brilliance on the part of Clines, and not only that but the fact that he pulled it off so well. He does an amazing job writing Mike and his viewpoint, treating and describing his condition in such an easy-to-understand, fascinating way that you just don't get tired of him. He feels in a lot of ways like Sherlock Holmes - a comparison that the book itself makes quite a few times.

The other area in which this book is superior to "14" is in the story itself. The premise of the books seems pretty simple: find out what is happening with the government's newest research project. Instead of trying to solve the mystery of a strange building we have a seemingly straightforward research experiment that seems to work on the surface but is giving us hints that something is wrong. As Mike delves deeper into the facts stranger and stranger things start happening. By the end things have blown up to the point where it's just as crazy as anything you'd expect from Clines, really delivering the payoff that is promised. This one really had me hooked on the edge of my seat throughout.

Content Warning: There is a lot of harsh language in this book, especially f-words, as well as some sex and sexual references, so this is definitely not YA or anything close to that.

Star Gate rip off without the dramatic conclusion - scientists turn action heroes

Struggled to finish at about the 2/3 mark. The protagonist is pretty dull and it's hard to stay engaged.

A very fun follow-up

Obligatory lecture: If you love audio, and you have not yet checked out 14, you should. That said, The Fold – which is set within the same universe, but stands on its own – may just as easily make a Peter Clines groupie out of you. This sci-fi mystery follows Mike, a not-so-ordinary high school teacher hired to investigate the scientists behind The Albuquerque Door, a machine that has made teleportation possible. It seems to work fine... but as he digs deeper, Mike soon realizes the scientists are hiding something. It's a signature Clines story, full of puzzles, fun characters, and plenty of weirdness. The cherry on top is 14 narrator Ray Porter, who so perfectly embodies the authors' characters and tone, mastering his unique blend of sarcasm and suspense.

I think 14 is still my favorite of the two books, but I have a feeling I'll be recommending The Fold just as frequently from now on. Side note: If you're a LOST fan like me, listen carefully - you'll have fun catching all the little nods Peter Clines sprinkled throughout this story!
