Publisher's Summary

Charles Murphy's superpower is useless. He can turn into a churro.

In a world where one percent of the population has powers, he's quite below average; many would say he's completely useless. And they have. At length. For years.

Despite his deep-seated desire to be a hero, his ability isn't glamorous and can't be used to fight crime, so he and a small cadre of similarly useless supers are relegated to Omega Team and told explicitly that all they will ever need to do is sit there and look pretty.

And while waiting to be called up to the big leagues, they might as well get laid, right?

Dangerous secrets will send the Omegas on an adventure none of them could have anticipated.

Can they step up to the plate and become the heroes they were meant to be?

Warning: This book contains explicit content and ridiculous situations that are suitable only for adults. But not, like, adult-y adults. More like teenagers who have adult bodies. (It's lowbrow, is what I'm saying.) Listener discretion strongly advised. 18+ only.

Clever, different, and delightfully shitty

Right off the bat, I want to qualify my recommendation of this book a bit. A lot of haremlit readers don't like books where the protagonist isn't a type-A personality, is often the object of ridicule, or has women that aren't head over heels for him for most of the story. If you wanted a power fantasy that lets you see through the eyes of the alpha male that all women immediately pine and have 'saved' themselves for, there are other options. But I think even those readers would have a hard time not finding things to love about this book, especially since the MC experiences more than a pastry transformation by the end.

And if they didn't give this book a chance, it would be a crying shame—this one really is a fun listen. Obviously the book doesn't take itself too seriously. But in contrast to other books in the genre, it doesn't derive its humor from making the MC into an unrelenting smartass (just a little bit of a smartass from time to time) or by throwing ham-fisted pop culture references at the reader/listener (just one or two here and there). The situational humor here is much better than that, relying on circumstance and characters to drive humor, rather than soulless one-liners. If I were to try to find similar humor in other books, I'd say it lands somewhere in the directions of Everybody Loves Large Chests or The (sort of) Dark Mage.

Before I continue with my review of the book, I want to call out Bradley Ford and Sierra Kline. They both did an excellent job with the narration, and they are both clearly very talented. Zero complaints here. Back to the book.

The MC is a bit of a goober, and there isn't a ton of world-building to establish his background in detail, but you know enough to know the character. For most of his life so far, he has been ignored because of his power. He starts as socially awkward, but more because of his environment growing up, less because of natural social tendencies.

As the story progresses he grows at a comfortable pace. His clumsy social interactions are initially a turn-off to the ladies in their group of misfits, but he quickly becomes a curiosity to them, for both his superpower and his similarly themed physical attribute. He is far from strong and capable at first, but they become more comfortable with him the more willing he is to open up, the more he improves himself, and the more willing he is to be considerate of them. The budding relationships work better both because he lets them progress more on their terms, and the story doesn't make his efforts to be better for them become emasculating. While there are more than a few laughs at his expense, especially after his first intimate encounter, he's allowed to both be embarrassed and take it in stride. He is, after all, a beginner in theses social circumstances, and even as he sometimes gets made fun of, he also earns their respect.

The adult scenes are surprisingly well done as well, being varied, and actually paint a picture of the characters involved, not just the actions they're involved in. I tend to find a lot of erotic content to be boring filler, so this is a nice change of pace.

The MC's power isn't just useless, at least at first, it is messy. The book doesn't shy away from the indignity of reforming back into a human after having been eaten as a churro. But there are aspects to it he has never considered. This works well within the story. He doesn't just gain a new power or figure out his power at a plot-convenient time, but figures out more about it when he's actually in a position to use it more frequently. Finding out more about his power, of course, leads to a change in his purpose and circumstance, and is the impetus for the major plot direction in this book. There is a larger plot involving advanced AI, government, and terrorists, and that larger plot is just fine. But it's the close-up development of Churro and his team that takes center stage here,

Honestly, the best part of this book is that I generally always wanted to keep listening. Most haremlit books have become a bit generic and stale to me. They are either too predictable, the characters are too one dimensional, or simply aren't that well written. This book was clever enough, funny enough, and the plot was novel enough to keep me listening. I hope we see much, much more from Ashus Evinco.

Surprisingly Good!!!

I had a few issues,

Minor Spoilers,

The MC was threatened with giving a blow job and he did nothing but continued helping. My issue is how he just let it go. One has to stand up for themself. Second, one used her powers during sexual activities to have another female submit and nothing happened to her but he was threatened with giving a BJ, really? I can't stand double standards!!!!

Given that overall the book had a good flow and the sex did not seem forced. The sex fits well with the story and even adds to it. I can't wait for the next book

Good

I refuse to believe someone who went to a “top” school and had access to the internet would be this ignorant of basic shit like what a loofah is... or assumptions about... I mean hell aside from internet, the people around you, movies and the like you tend to pick shit up even just observing. Aside from my nitpicking overall good book.

Hilarious yet serious

Not your typical super hero story. The blurb for this story is exactly as it states. I laughed many times throughout it and can't wait until the next one!

I'm shocked how good this book is.

To be honest I'm upset there isn't a book 3 yet I thought this was an excellent read even though I bought it thinking that it would be a pretty shitty (pun intended) book but something to listen to when I get bored I was wrong once you get past chapter 4 everything just snowballs into a much better read with a deal of character development, word building and really easy to understanding how the character's power sets evolve. The sex scenes however go from slightly perverted, to little freaky, to very kinky, and finally monster porn but not real monster porn it was honestly all just a very interesting read and I wish there were more books to this series.

Enjoyed Every Bite!!

So... I just listened to this bizarre, but AWESOME book!! “The First Course” by Ashus Evinco. Has anyone else enjoyed some Churro lately?!?! “Charles Murphy's superpower is useless. He can turn into a churro.” I totally get it; this premise sounds crazy; but the silliness of the power goes away fairly quickly and it becomes an integral part of the story. Trust me, the main character does enough self deprecating in the beginning until he realizes his worth. Give it a try for a few chapters, I think you will be pleasantly surprised!! 🤣😋🧁

Not ashamed to say that I totally picked it because of the HILARIOUS Warning Label.

I enjoyed it but it won't be for everyone

honestly could likely knock the story bit to a three star, it has potential but this first book was mainly slice of life, training and exotic stuff.
none the less I had fun with it.

One of if not the Best 1st Book of a Harem RPG Superhero series.

I really can't wait for this series to explode into a 3 or 5 part series. I really do enjoy how they have integrated the sexual scenario into the story and it got really well. I don't feel the need to skip it if it gets to much into holding back the actual story. I really like this book and I hope more authors decide to follow this format. Great job from top to bottom. Now I'm stuck with regular Harem books or regular RPG. I've been spoiled. 👍

Amazing

A brutal start kicks this series of with a bang. The author isn't pulling his punches as the MC is taken on the journey from punching bag to a true hero. A dystopian society has twisted the truth and reality as the most powerful snack on the planet power up both himself and his girls to take on the world. I can't wait to read the continuation of what awaits Churro in the next part of this tale.

Solid, Funny and Suitably dirty for a Harem Sci Fi

let's start what your all came here for, the sex is pretty good, not great or steamy but fun, engaging and a little kinky with a solid performance from the narrators. also there is plenty of it so not one to listen to on long hikes on the underground

the book is pretty funny and doesn't take itself to seriously, the weird and strange powers these guys have lead to some real laugh out loud situation.

overall a pretty strong addition to the gener and a pleasant surprise , its just weird enough to work and i'm looking forward to future books :)

A sexy superpowered romp filled with laughs!

An excellent story from new-comer Ashus Evinco. A humorous parody of the Super Hero genre turned sexy harem adventure.

When a group of natural born supers turn out to have utterly useless powers, what is the Super' s Guild meant to do with them? Relegate them to the ignoble Team Omega, drop them in their dorms to train and promptly forget about them. No heroics for these six young supers.

What is there to do for them other than work out, experiment with their powers and maybe... fool around? Unaware of the dark machinations both within the guild and without, our heroes must learn to get along, try anything to get stronger and perhaps help a sultry voiced AI assistant with problems of their own.

...but how much can you do if your only power is turning yourself into a Churro?

It should be noted that this story does include super hero tropes, explicit sex, descriptions of tasty pastries, awkward youth interactions, graphic violence, plumbing, tazers, gory explosions, cold Chinese food and bad language. If you're not up for a wild ride this story might not be for you.
