I usually find it easy to follow storylines, but this one kept me guessing. There are a few twists that lean towards intrigue later in the series but honestly over all it was good story telling. The author doesn't give anything away at what might be happening later on which kept it interesting. Much like you're a witness rather than a reader which makes for amazing world building. They do get into how magic works better much later but it's kept fairly vague and you actually learn stuff as they do so I believe it's both intentional and convenient. You don't get bogged down into a detailed working of magic and it leaves narrative leeway that didn't poke holes in its own world building. The writing style reminded me of Terry Goodkind, and the Sword of Truth series.

Unlike many books in this genre, the story was more than afterthought to go around the smut. Both the story, and the chosen narrators were great. I would love to spend more time with this world and these characters.

Yes, this book has sex in it. This tends to be a red flag for me, as usually the author just wants to write some steamy sex scenes and doesn't care enough about the story to make it worthwhile. This definitely wasn't the case, as the story was great and kept me wondering where it would go next. I got attached to the characters, enjoyed the worldbuilding, loved the magic style.

the story is pretty good, and the narrators do a good job, though some pronunciation is a bit weird, it ends up sounding endearing. what makes this story so damn good is that the main characters are not idiots. despite being little more than children with more power than they know what to do with, they manage to have emotional intelligence. misunderstandings are cleared up with honest conversations, and several times the main couple have an internal monologue where they acknowledge their own immaturity or the unfairness in how they have interacted with someone. it's beyond refreshing to have a story that holds up without needing contrived drama and misunderstanding to move things forward.

The voices of the characters were superbly performed. The books lacked nothing. What I really enjoyed was the fact that the carnal elements in the book did not outweigh the story, the characters, or the plot. And those carnal elements were done with great care and bring just enough spice and tension that are like adding nutmeg to your eggnog. It’s just right.
