Fire and Water don’t mix.

Sophia:

I’m Sophia Henley, your typical college freshman. I never expected a lion to be stalking me, nor for fire to come shooting out of my hands to protect my sister. Next thing I know, a drop-dead gorgeous guy shows up on my doorstep to sweep me away to a magical school, where I’ll learn to control my element and bond with a powerful creature called a Familiar. I don’t believe I’m the savior of an ancient tribe, or the missing piece of a prophecy that’s more myth than reality. Worst of all, I’m forced to enter the Elemental Cup, where I’ll either earn my place in this society...or die trying.

Liam:

The night I met Sophia, I didn’t think we’d form an undeniable connection. But I’m from the Water tribe, and she’s Fire. I’m forced to push her away even as I’m falling for her. I lost everything, yet Sophia makes me whole again. Our world is fixed on keeping us apart, but we’re in this tournament together. We have to keep each other alive at any cost - or I’ll give my life for hers. It’s pretty clear. If I continue to play with fire, I’m going to get burned.

The Fire Prophecy by Megan Linski and Alicia Rades was well written with a dual points-of-view, capturing the highs and lows of unseen chronic illnesses (like autoimmune, mental health, and other physical disabilities), helping readers going through similar situations feel seen. The book's story engaging and full of adventure, with well-developed characters and extremely cute elements. The writing is extremely well written, making it a quick read, making it a good start to a new series.

I would recommend it to an 18+ audience due to some of the scenes described in the series; but don't let that turn you away because the characters are playful, loving, loyal, at times serious, and caring to a fault towards one another. I would recommend it to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, Princess Bride, and Percy Jackson fans.

I enjoyed the interactions between the "Reject Team" and their cute and quirky familiars the most. How each familiar had their own personality, but mirrored their person's personality as well. I also loved the meet miss sunshine vs mister gloomy gus dynamic between Sophia and Liam.

The first chapter is short, catches your attention, and put you in Liam's POV within two pages and one simple paragraph, "They didn’t understand what it was like to be on the brink of life and death constantly— fuck, I didn’t even know. Not until after it happened. My entire life was turned upside down. I didn’t even know who I was anymore. My life became nothing but questions. Was the man I was before just a lie? Or was the old Liam dead, and did this new, shitty one come to take his place?" ... "Grief is like being underwater, but never being allowed to come up to breathe."

In the the second chapter, the authors really capture Sophia's personality withing the first few sentences, "“Sophia Henley, you’re dead!” It took everything I had not to bust a gut laughing. Amelia had threatened my murder enough times throughout my childhood that I knew her words were nothing more than an empty threat. Besides, all I did was admit to stealing a pair of jeans she’d left home while she was off at college. That was hardly a crime worthy of a death sentence. I shot a smirk at my sister. “You’ll have to catch me first.” I didn’t give her a chance to respond. I sprinted forward, ignoring the burn in my legs as I raced up the mountain trail."

I disliked how awful their adversaries were... without giving spoilers; everyone grows and develops in their character lines so give the author’s some leeway. I disliked this because it made the adversaries very two-dimensional in this book. Where everyone else was becoming very developed and easy to see in my mind.

The authors' writing style brought the story to life and I loved their voices; there were a few issues with the authors' grammar that made the story confusing and hurt the flow of the novel, but overall I loved it. The story gave me all the feels (sorrow, happiness, surprise, fear/anxiety for characters' wellbeing, anger, disgust, ect). The book in a genres I normally would read fantasy, action, comedy/humor, mystery, suspense, science fiction, young adult, paranormal, romantacy, ... and it hits all of them.

The most memorable moment in the book is the moment Sophia met Esis, "I sat up to wipe the water off my face with the back of my hand, then looked down at him. Oh, my heart. It was the cutest thing I’d ever seen. I thought my heart might explode. He had big, fur-covered ears like a fennec fox, with a fluffy tail, chubby cheeks, and a small black nose. Two tiny, rounded horns protruded from the top of his head. His paws were miniature and adorable. The thing that got me, though, were his eyes. I’d only ever seen eyes that big and round in cartoons and on stuffed animals. But here he was in real life, staring up at me with sparkling blue eyes that took up half his face. The creature’s expression softened, and I swear he smiled at me." Esis is my favorite character in all of the Academy of Magical Creatures books.

I would and have purchased the next book in the series and other novels by Megan Linski and Alicia Rades. I have finished Academy of Magical Creatures books, binge reading books 1 through 6 in a week, and started on University of Sorcery. Then I will read the College of Witchcraft series, and then the Prison for Supernatural Offenders, and whatever they write as it comes out. I want to know what happens to the characters and the author’s are doing an excellent job of tying these standalone book series together without making it to where you have to read the other series to understand each series (Academy of Magical Creatures, University of Sorcery, College of Witchcraft, & Prison for Supernatural Offenders).

All of the feels & the Narration was top notch

This book started out very slow but once I got going, I couldn’t stop listening to it. There’s a good mix of Romance and fantasy and adventure

Great book

The story seems really cool, the familiars are great. The characters are the worst, and act like 16 year olds instead of college age.

Very juvenile
