unhinged storyline

i can’t say this was good or bad as a whole, but the characters are completely unhinged. i genuinely wonder at the mental state of the author to so brilliantly make my jaw hit the floor with the craziness of these characters.

Nothing has really stood out. I do constantly wonder how she can consistently write clueless and ditzy female main characters.

This series never disappoints!

Funny, whitty, and omg so spicy! Love every single book in this series and can’t wait for the next one!

Author’s formula is toxic

I suppose this series’s moniker of “revenge” at least provided fair warning about the mean-spirited things the FMCs do, but listening brought home the author’s other unfortunate formula characters and plots. The FMCs are doormats, and the ones with the dysfunctions, ex-baggage, and lackluster sexual experiences. The MMCs are dominant in bed, possessive in and out of bed, and demonstrate their green flag material by solving the FMCs problems. Apparently, it’s too much to expect a smart, independent FMC who can stick up for herself.

Here, we get Olivia, who let her controlling, high-society mother dictate every aspect of her wedding to the high-society guy that Olivia was marrying for no good reason ever explained. Then, Olivia embarks on a prolonged, obsessive revenge mission and we’re supposed to be okay with her doxxing and defamation because, although she doesn’t know it, her ex is a white collar criminal.

Meanwhile, we have to slog through 1.5 hours of her being a vindictive brat before Andre even enters the picture, and 4 hours before their second meeting. If this book had been half its length, and upped the comedy, I might have enjoyed Andre’s exasperation as he tried to protect the criminal investigation from Olivia’s bonkers revenge schemes. If I had any respect for Olivia, I might have felt the chemistry and enjoyed the dirty, mouthy sex scenes. Sadly, this was too long and unbalanced for me to embrace the toxic and call it fun. Of the five books, this was my least favorite. I recommend instead Cruel Summer, which gets away from some (but not all) of the formulas.
