The narrator was pretty good, he had great energy, however I didn’t care much for the voices he created for the human characters, they were a bit whiny.
Overall - not terrible but not really my cup of tea.

Horror in The Woods:
This has a Texas Chain Saw Massacre feeling in the sense that I think the Webb family really was modeled after that type of backwoods cannibalistic family. Like most backwoods stories this has some creepy mutated family members and Grandpa, the secret of the entire family. Compared to some of his later stories, this wasn’t as scary, but definitely has some quite graphic parts that some might think is too much. Overall I think this is a great story to get introduced to Mountford’s writings.
I think my favorite part of this story was the characters. I felt like I was spinning trying to keep up with all of them and how they were changing throughout the story. One moment you are rooting for one person and then you are forced to rooting for someone else.
Tormented:
I think the asylum type story is a difficult one to really nail perfectly since there is so many ways it can easily go off the rails. While this definitely has a monster type aspect to the story, the horror of being in an asylum with lunatics, both staff and patients, is really the tormenting part. The supernatural demonic aspects were good, but only as they provided another level of horror to the already claustrophobic feel of being locked up with nightmares. I felt that was more of a means to an end versus the actual end. Speaking of endings, didn’t see that coming.
Mountford does a great job of getting you to understand the fear and emotions his characters are feeling. The story is no different and to me it is those character's behavior and their respective development that was one of the best parts of the story. I really liked their different personalities and the back story that got them committed to the asylum. The interaction between each other and the orderlies really pushed the story along and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. Locked up in an institution is a huge fear of mine, so the day to day interaction at the asylum kept me on edge the whole time. As far as characters go, Mother, was by far my favorite and epitomized my expectation of an asylum inmate.
The Netherwell Horror:
I enjoyed the mystery of Beth looking for her brother in the small town. Beth’s character was great and I really liked her as a person. She was well developed and personable enough that I became attached to her quite quickly. The setting was quite enjoyable and I really liked to hear about the different inhabitants. Beth researching into the disappearance of her brother and the secrets of the town seemed to really take over the story. I enjoyed those aspects, but they didn’t really leave me on the edge of my seat as I am used to with Mountford stories. It wasn’t until the end that the horror really picked up and once it did it was hard and heavy.
The Mountford and Hills pairing has been great. I really like the narration Hills provides to all of Mountford’s stories and especially his character voices. He really puts a lot of energy into the characters and you can feel their emotion. Hills really breathes life into these books and I am happy that he continues to stick with him as his narrator.

Like others have said, I couldn’t get through the second story but you can skip chapters using the Audible app.
If you like to combine drinking games with your audiobooks you will really enjoy taking a shot each time you hear the narrator say: “Pleeeeez!!!”
