Solid Collection of Horror
Been a huge fan of Lee Mountford’s horror stories and this is a great collection to get you into his stories if you haven’t listened to any of his books yet. This is a collection of some of his earlier books and while they are great stories, they are his earlier work and you can tell he definitely matured really quickly and I definitely prefer his newer books. That said, I do enjoy going through an author’s stories somewhat chronologically so you can see how they grow as and author and learn to appreciate where they get to from where they started. I also wouldn’t classify this as extreme horror, definitely good solid horror with some moments of grotesque descriptions, but extreme horror is a different class all by itself. I’m not a huge fan of extreme horror as it tends to be over the top for the sake of being over the top and it sacrifices plot and character development for the sake over being as gross as possible. Montford isn’t that type of author, these are just good horror stories.
Horror in The Woods:
This has a Texas Chain Saw Massacre feeling in the sense that I think the Webb family really was modeled after that type of backwoods cannibalistic family. Like most backwoods stories this has some creepy mutated family members and Grandpa, the secret of the entire family. Compared to some of his later stories, this wasn’t as scary, but definitely has some quite graphic parts that some might think is too much. Overall I think this is a great story to get introduced to Mountford’s writings.
I think my favorite part of this story was the characters. I felt like I was spinning trying to keep up with all of them and how they were changing throughout the story. One moment you are rooting for one person and then you are forced to rooting for someone else.
Tormented:
I think the asylum type story is a difficult one to really nail perfectly since there is so many ways it can easily go off the rails. While this definitely has a monster type aspect to the story, the horror of being in an asylum with lunatics, both staff and patients, is really the tormenting part. The supernatural demonic aspects were good, but only as they provided another level of horror to the already claustrophobic feel of being locked up with nightmares. I felt that was more of a means to an end versus the actual end. Speaking of endings, didn’t see that coming.
Mountford does a great job of getting you to understand the fear and emotions his characters are feeling. The story is no different and to me it is those character's behavior and their respective development that was one of the best parts of the story. I really liked their different personalities and the back story that got them committed to the asylum. The interaction between each other and the orderlies really pushed the story along and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. Locked up in an institution is a huge fear of mine, so the day to day interaction at the asylum kept me on edge the whole time. As far as characters go, Mother, was by far my favorite and epitomized my expectation of an asylum inmate.
The Netherwell Horror:
I enjoyed the mystery of Beth looking for her brother in the small town. Beth’s character was great and I really liked her as a person. She was well developed and personable enough that I became attached to her quite quickly. The setting was quite enjoyable and I really liked to hear about the different inhabitants. Beth researching into the disappearance of her brother and the secrets of the town seemed to really take over the story. I enjoyed those aspects, but they didn’t really leave me on the edge of my seat as I am used to with Mountford stories. It wasn’t until the end that the horror really picked up and once it did it was hard and heavy.
The Mountford and Hills pairing has been great. I really like the narration Hills provides to all of Mountford’s stories and especially his character voices. He really puts a lot of energy into the characters and you can feel their emotion. Hills really breathes life into these books and I am happy that he continues to stick with him as his narrator.

It wants a good editor
A fair concept, with Cthuluesque monsters, but the writing is junior high school at best. Creatures are given horrifying descriptions and followed by, “It was horrifying.” Dialogue is often melodramatic and overexplanatory. An editor should have intervened
The performance is okay, but slow. I had to start at 1.2x speed to avoid boredom, then had to keep increasing it to avoid the poor writing.

Interesting
The stories contained gruesome details of death and torture. In the first book I found it interesting, by the third it grew a bit tiresome. I questioned why each story contained the same type of evil. By the third book however that question was answered.
Overall it was an interesting concept and worth a listen.

I liked it a lot
The narration was great! the world building was strong and character description was extremely thorough. The reason I did not give it 5 stars was the redundancy within the descriptions of each death scene. The repetitive nature lied within scene the excess in which it was made.. The writing also relied heavily on redundant language. whenenever the landscape was devastated by tragedy, there was a formulaic process over describing events unfolding. This was probably caused by the insistent reuse of words. The reason I read on, and think you should too, pertains to the unique fear this universe provided. The stories were vastly different yet interwoven with the same lack of of mercy that truly surprises the reader. Getting past the fluff unveils a sense of chaotic torment to all "good" characters in the trilogy. No matter what they did, they were rarely rewarded. And all saw such unforgiving abuse by the author. I was unnerved by the stories embracrment of how random and cold life actually is. This book reminded me of that hence the sense of unease. Lastly, the ending spectacularly ties up the trilogy, solidifing the horror by refusing an ending with warm fuzzies. But it was satisfying, and worth the wait.

loved the series all his books though standalone are all connected including the supernatural collection the demonic, the mark and the forest of the damned. I recommend reading all of them to get the info you may have missed and references I'm not a fan of gratuitous gore but it works for the author. I hope there is a continuation of netherwell cause the ending was great.

Meh! Not scary at all.
It’s as scary as a ladybird book read by Bernard Cribbins. Like a jackanory book.
Don’t get this book as the story is pants and the narrator is boring. If you want a scary book look for Wade H Garret. These are scary with a large bit of humour thrown in.
