A cruel past left Hannah Gray with one simple longing - normalcy. Normal ladies ride and waltz without fear. They have safe, normal husbands to give them safe, normal kisses. After years of healing, she's ready to find "normal" for herself, and Lady Wallingham's house party is the perfect place to begin. Perfect, that is, except for the cynical wolf-in-rogue's-clothing whose every hungry glance threatens to crack her armor and pierce her fragile heart.

Painfully shy Jane Huxley is the furthest thing from a diamond of the first water. Bookish, bespectacled, and, well, plain, she never expected to befriend a dissolute charmer like Colin Lacey, much less agree to help him retrieve a lost family heirloom. Fortunately, he is nothing like his cold, rigid older brother. Unfortunately, he is not above deception if it means winning a wager. And that puts Jane in a most precarious position. For Harrison Lacey, the Duke of Blackmore, protecting his family honor is not a choice, it is a necessity.

Life for Victoria Lacey should be perfect. And it is - perfectly boring. Agree to marry a lord who has yet to inspire a single, solitary tingle? Why, of course. Smile as though this is not the thousandth time he's mentioned hounds and hunting? It's all in a day's work for the oh-so-proper sister of the Duke of Blackmore. Surely no one would suspect her secret longing for heart-racing, head-spinning passion. Except, perhaps, a dark stranger...on a terrace...at a ball where she should definitely not be kissing a man she has only just met.

Publisher's Summary
When a rake beyond redemption...
A walking scandal surviving on little more than wits, whisky, and wicked skills in the bedchamber, Benedict Chatham, the new Marquess of Rutherford, is at the end of his rope. Deeply in debt and down to his last farthing, he must marry nothing short of an absolute fortune, or risk utter ruin.
Must marry for money...
Enter Miss Charlotte Lancaster, unfashionably tall heiress to just such a fortune and a clumsy, redheaded disaster in her five London seasons. While she dreams of leaving England for a life of trade in America, her father schemes to trade her dowry for a title - and Marchioness of Rutherford will do nicely. Charlotte wants her independence, not a husband, and certainly not a disreputable devil who renders her weak and wobbly with a single scorching glance. But she's a practical sort, and a year with the devil might buy her freedom....provided she can resist his seductive charms. That shouldn't prove a problem, for he could not possibly want someone like her, and the feeling is mutual. Really. It is.
Love grows in the most unexpected places...
When her father demands a startling price for his daughter's hand - one year of fidelity and sobriety - Chatham must change his libertine ways....at least temporarily. And when he does, Charlotte begins to see him in a new light - not as the scandalous charmer she married, but as the husband she just might adore.
Contains mature themes.

My favorite of the series!
This book was awesome. I fell head over heels in love with the characters and enjoyed their love story immensely. The conflict didn't feel contrived and I didn't get impatient with the hero and heroine. I understood where they were coming from and empathized with their reservations regarding their union and their future. The book was also incredibly sexy, with well-written love scenes. My only complaint is with the narrator. Seriously, the woman has not come across a vowel she didn't manage to mangle. Nobody talks like that! It's not an accent, it's simple mispronunciation, most likely in an attempt to sound "posh". The result is an unique situation - the dialogue portions were actually quite good, but the narration bits were simply awful and it pulled me out of the story time and again. Fortunately I had read this book in print before and knew what a gem it was. If not, I would most probably have abandoned the audio version and returned it for refund. Nevermind "Rescued from Ruin", this series should have been rescued from Mary Sarah.

WOW, WOW, WOW . . . . . . . . WHO KNEW! ! !
Who knew the sly, slick, and wicked devil the Marquess of Ruthford, would turn out to have one of the best stories in this series. I fell in love with these characters and their story. Chatham lives up to his reputation as a lover- bar none. After finding out the story behind the man, I was in his corner all the way. Even tho he had a rough time, Charlotte made sure he would win all the battles he was forced to fight. His battle with himself being the roughest of them all. Charlotte had it going on. Girl, she is smart as a whip and used her knowledge and intelligence to help Chatham, and herself, win all the battles they where faced with. Ms. Braden has reached new heights describing the many sex scenes in this story. They are well placed and needed to tell Chatham and Charlotte's story. Chatham being the sexy man he is, as well as the sexual attraction between these characters. I will be listening to their story again, and again. The narrator needs a lot of work. Just put your device on a faster speed (since Mary Sara seems to be the narrator of choice) so you can really enjoy this series.

NARRATOR SPEAKS TO LOW VOLUME NEEDS TO BE SET HIGH
OMG I LOVED BENEDICT/CHATHAM AND CHARLOTTE'S STORY!! After 5 years on the marriage mart the tall, red hair, intelligent, smart Charlotte Lancaster has failed to land a husband. Her father the filthy rich American Merchant has bought her a husband. The disreputable, callous, whore mongering, gambling, drunk Benedict Chatham now the Marquess of Rutherford after his fathers recent dead. I truly hateD Chatham from the pervious 3 books in the series. He was an awful person. But with the careful and gradual way the author reveals Chatham's real and true character is poignant and totally believable that he has changed. Once His past is revealed and he has stopped drinking and starts taking responsibility for his life and his new wife I fell in love with him. Charlotte always thinking she was just not pretty enough, too tall with red hair and freckles never waiver in her growing friendship and then love for her new husband. As the layers of the true Chatham is revealed she begins to fall in love with him. Charlotte is intelligent, kind, compassionate and very loving. Her and Chatham learn the true meaning of love. They also, have one hot and sexy marriage, but this doesn't happen right away. There is a heated build up to there sexual marital relationship. Charlotte has never even been kissed by a man let alone made love too. But she enters her marriage bed with complete courage if not confidence. I loved the way Chatham begins to make Charlotte feel that she is beautiful and very desirable to him. This was truly a great romance story. I just loved it and it will go on my re read list along with bks. 1 and 2. Sorry can't included bk 3 in the re read list. I am still upset with the violence toward the heroine in that story. I am off to read bk5 When A Girl Loves And Earl!!

He was never loved, She wants to leave!
He has never been loved and she wants to return to America. Chatham is nothing but a walking scandal and down to his last farthing. His father has debts all over and he must sell all the unentailed property to pay those debts. When a offer he can't refuse comes his way, he just has to be sober and faithful to his wife for the next year. Charlotte has been scheming against her father for 5 years putting aside money so that she can return to America and start her trade. Her father has other ideas. When he tells her he finally has someone with a title that agrees to marry her, she is devastated. A great story with a beautiful ending. Mary Sarah is a wonderful narrator.

18 minutes in and returned the book
I quite like Elisa Braden, her books are fun and stories are diverting. This review is not for the plot or writing and for that I am sorry. I read the first 3 in this series on my kindle, so felt this was a safe bet for a download for walking. Oh how wrong I was. This is one of the WORST narrations I have ever heard. What is the deal with historical romance that makes the performer/director think that people want a) crap irish/scottish accents, EVERY line being read as if the reader is on the brink of orgasm even when describing a front door or street cobble c) faux fancy RP with the wrong intonations and stresses on common words and every sentence drown out in the end to create atmosphereeeeeeeeee? Unbearable. Returned immediately and unfinished.
