Publisher's summary

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba!

In this third volume, several months have passed, and Roland's two new tet-mates have become trained gunslingers. Eddie Dean has given up heroin, and Odetta's two selves have joined, becoming the stronger and more balanced personality of Susannah Dean. But while battling The Pusher in 1977 New York, Roland altered ka by saving the life of Jake Chambers, a boy who - in Roland's world - has already died. Now Roland and Jake exist in different worlds, but they are joined by the same madness: the paradox of double memories.

Roland, Susannah, and Eddie must draw Jake into Mid-World and then follow the Path of the Beam all the way to the Dark Tower. Along the way our tet stumbles into the ruined city of Lud, and are caught between the warring gangs of the Pubes and the Grays. The only way out of Lud is to wake Blaine the Mono, an insane train that has a passion for riddling, and for suicidal journeys.

Good narrator, good story, bad production

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, after warning them that the quality of the recording is not up to par with other recent audiobooks

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dark Tower III?

When Jake was kidnapped by Gasher and taken underground.

Which character – as performed by Frank Muller – was your favorite?

Gasher

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It's too long for that

Any additional comments?

It is unfortunate that the recording features constant white noise in the background. Book II and Book IV also has this annoying distraction. The recording is pieced together in a distracting way. However, the story is good and the narrator is fantastic; otherwise, I would not keep going. At this point, I'm invested in this well above average book series.

Magnificent

This is my favorite of the Dark Tower books. Frank Muller at his best. I miss him so. I will probably get way more than my money's worth with this on for I will read it over and over in my many trips to the Dark Tower. Long days and pleasant nights.

He's a great reader...

Though I'm not sure he captured Susannah very well, not that I could have done any better.

Frank Muller shines.

Where does The Waste Lands rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would say that this ranks in the top 10 easily. I have almost 100 titles in my audio library right now so I don't say that lightly.

What did you like best about this story?

Frank Muller. The story is astounding but his narration outshines even the intricate nuances of Stephen King's Midworld.

What about Frank Muller’s performance did you like?

His voices are so convincing and effortless. Even with as many characters as there are in this series, you could listen to Frank's performance with zero dialogue attribution and it would be entirely understandable.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I honestly can't say. It would spoil things which I do not intend to do for you. Pay close attention in the last "part" of the book - you'll be glad you did when you read the next one.

Any additional comments?

This book is a gem. The narration cements its place in my top 10 list.

Draws you in and leaves you hanging

What did you love best about The Waste Lands?

I enjoyed the characters and the way King just draws you into his story. This was a fantastic followup to the Drawing of The Three. I did not like the ending in that it did not feel like a good conclusion, with the conclusion really being with the beginning of Wizard and Glass.

What does Frank Muller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voices and tone give an amazing energy to the characters of Eddie and Roland.

If you could take any character from The Waste Lands out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Susanna Dean. She just seems like an amazingly strong person.
