From USA Today bestselling author Gayle Callen comes a fascinating historical novel of three courageous young women who aid a desperate British spy during the German occupation of Guernsey Island in World War II.

In 1940, Germany seizes control of Guernsey without a fight—but not without resistance. Innocent young teacher Catherine is forced to house a German officer. Shrewd waitress Betty seeks to elude the persistent Nazi determined to conquer her. And courageous nurse Helen cares for her patients—both British and German—while hiding a British spy in her seaside cottage.

Their fight against the injustices being enacted on their island home brings the women, the spy, and their enemies together in one night that will change all of their lives forever. Though none of them could foresee that the battle they fought that night would reach across time to 1997, when the tragic fallout ensnares Helen once more.

There was nothing I disliked about this book. The horrifying impact of war on the Guernsey was presented without excessive detail but clearly enough to help the reader understand.

The history, character development, unexpected ending

Loved the different voices. Made it seem real. Seemed like the girls were telling the story. Weak beginning but got much better.

Interesting to hear how the war affected small towns.

It was a good World War II story.
Told from a different angle with good characters and a bit of mystery.
Made me happy, sad, and angry.
Good narration

I really enjoyed the plot of this book. Excellent twists and very interesting. There narrator is ok. Not my favorite, and it took me a third of the book to adjust to her voice and pace, but once I did, the story kept rolling. Even if I didn't love the narrator, the book was still definitely worth the time. So glad I stuck with it to the end!

This was one of my very favorite historical fiction novels on WWII. There was so much to hope for and so much to grieve and to celebrate. I am so glad I listened!
Narration was phenomenal!

I greatly enjoyed this book. From the moment I started reading I couldn’t put it down. Such an interesting WW2 story. The ending wasn’t my favorite but the overall story was really good.

Couldn’t put it down

This story presents an interesting perpsective on German occupation duing World War 2. Because it's set in a less important somewhat isolated area, different aspects of war time occupation are portrayed. Three different woman with 3 different experiences make this an interesting tale. I also larned about a part of the world I wasnt aware of before.

Interesting historical fiction

Absolutely beautiful story. A must read for anyone that enjoys historical fiction or tales from WW2. Don’t miss this one.

There aren’t enough stars

I really enjoyed the characters in this story. Each is distinctive with her own struggles while having this common experience of German occupation of their home. There are some rather brutal scenes, but it is a war story. I appreciate the modern-day story that runs parallel to the war story. Very nicely done!
