Publisher's Summary

People often ask Sarah, "How did you forgive your alcoholic mother?"

How do you forgive someone who carelessly brushed aside your pain, who caused such destruction, and who doesn't show remorse? How do you know when to stay and when to go?

In The Complicated Heart, you will travel through Sarah's story with her, from age 14 and beyond, as she wrestles with these very questions. Prepare yourself: She holds nothing back.

If you've struggled with a difficult relationship, if you've felt torn-up and crazy and confused because of it, if you just want to know how to move forward and be okay, this story is for you.

Dysfunction does not have to be your destiny or your identity.

Victory is on the table.

What's more: You'll not only travel with Sarah, you'll travel with her mom as well as you hear her mom's journal entries and letters. What goes on in the mind of the person who hurt you the most? In this story, you'll get a rare peek into that mind and heart.

Powerful book on forgiveness

This book is raw and one that I would encourage all to read! As Sarah Mae states, “you will find yourself in this book.” Not only does Sarah share a testimony that is so powerful, she does it with grace and an abundance of mercy on those who have been so hurtful. She has done the hard work that is needed in forgiveness, and she shines light on how others may experience the same peace. This book is a true gift from God! I feel honored to have read it, and I will forever share it with others.

A powerful story, so perfectly called complicated.

An amazing story of overcoming through the power of Jesus. Forgiveness, heartache and oh so complicated moldings. Truly inspiring and a powerful message.

I wish I could hug Sarah Mae and her Mom for writing this. I appreciated the raw honesty and at the same time the comforting hope it gave.

Undone in the best way

I first heard of this book when i read an excerpt on Ann Voskamp's blog....and I knew I had to get it. I listened to it every day for 3 days straight. It undid me. She wrote all my thoughts and feelings, and I cried through it. But hearing her story, how she processed through her hurts and got to a place of healing, how she loved through her pain and loved herself enough to set and enforce boundaries.....it was amazing. I learnt so much and I felt so encouraged knowing I'm not alone. And the narration was beautiful!

just what I needed

I struggle with rejection and insecurity, and this title randomly popped up in my feed. I've loved it, and resonate with a lot of what is said. On day 2, I reached out to someone who hurt me and whom I hurt in turn, and now we're talking. thanks Sarah for putting this out into the world. God continues to bless us.
