Publisher's Summary

Coroner Jenny Cooper investigates…. An unlikely suicide or a deadly conspiracy? When Bristol Coroner Jenny Cooper investigates the fatal plunge of a man from a motorway bridge, she little suspects that it has any connection with the sudden death of a friend’s thirteen year old daughter from a deadly strain of meningitis. But as Jenny pieces together the dead man’s last days, she’s drawn into a mystery whose dark ripples stretch across continents and back through decades.

In an investigation which will take her into the sinister realms of unbridled human ambition and corrupt scientific endeavour, Jenny is soon forced to risk the love and lives of those closest to her, as a deadly race to uncover the truth begins….

In depth to the terrifying

Finding all the Jenny novels steeped in immaculate research, i enjoy. This hit a bit too close to home as the covid 19 ravages the world population. so on that note, it was a scary read. Still I’m always grateful that he makes Jenny Cooper human and vulnerable. As well as intelligent. It keeps her story from being a cozy and puts it right up there with the best of mystery thrillers.

It is so droll you may die while reading it!!

morbid curiosity is the only reason I finished this book. I read the first four because they were included (luckily), but I regret paying anything for this depressive boredom

Jenny fights the good fight

I enjoy this series. This one has a very interesting subject matter, chemical warfare. As always Jenny won't be stopped by anyone to uncover the truth all while battling her own demon's. I look forward to the next book.

Another stand alone. Very good.
Our, Coroner, Superwoman pulls at one loose thread too many and we're off - you will have made a pot of coffee. or poured a wine - before starting this. Once started this book will keep you listening to the smashing end.

Disappointing

I have read books 1- 4 of Jenny Cooper Coroner series and have enjoyed them all except this. It involved the most unlikely adventures for a responsible person or coroner. It read more like a Famous Five or Secret Seven amateur detective investigation. I found it way too incredulous to suspend disbelief. I will buy the next book in the series in the hope that this is an aberration. This book is unworthy of both the author and the protagonist, Ms Cooper.

Brainy, moody

If you could sum up The Chosen Dead in three words, what would they be?

Complex; psychological; dark

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Chosen Dead?

There are many. The plot slowly unwinds with many unexpected turns. The coroner's trials were both highpoints.

Which character – as performed by Sian Thomas – was your favorite?

Jenny Cooper

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Nightmares of our own making.

Any additional comments?

A thriller that poses complex social and philosophical questions. It may move too slowly for some, but not for those who enjoy a thinking person's mystery.

Creepy premise but interesting story

If you could sum up The Chosen Dead in three words, what would they be?

Plague is here

What did you like best about this story?

It makes you think about what would happen if plague came to our shores and how would we respond to it.

Which scene was your favorite?

I think the scenes where Jenny Cooper tells her detractors to nick off.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Jenny is looking at the dead girl and thinking what if....

Gripping

Great series but this book is quite scary to listen to during the COVID 19 pandemic given the actions of government agencies and other parties interested in only covering their own backs. At times became distracted thinking of what is happening in the here and now and the story itself. Thoroughly recommend it

Brilliant

This is a brilliant intelligent thriller, offering complex believable characters and excellent plotting around contemporary issues. The narration by Sian Thomas is superb - she really inhabits the characters, making each one distinct and credible. It's an excellent combination of pacy writing and vivid narration.

Another ripping yarn

I love this series and this is no exception - a very good story, brilliantly narrated by Sian Thomas. Jenny Cooper is a coroner and this time she investigates an apparent suicide. With that as a hook you can imagine how determined she is to find out why the young man committed suicide - if he did. The plot is a little bit exaggerated although there is an interesting explanation by the author of the background to the book. If you have read the others in the series this is an excellent addition, but if you have not I absolutely recommend that you start at the beginning of the series - all of which are very good listens.

Excellent Book

This, another book in the Coroner series, is well up to his previous books. Jenny Cooper, the Coroner, is a no nonsense character who gives her all for the unfortunate victims. The characters are believable, the plots are always good. One of the most standout features of the series though, apart from the writing, is that Sian Thomas has, in my mind the perfect voice for the character. How many times are books let down by whiny voices. Not in this case. Roll on the next Coroner book.

Another absorbing story!

M R Hall has come up with another original story, cleverly plotted and wonderfully brought to life by the excellent Sian Thomas.

Jenny Cooper is a bit of an infuriating heroine at times, always jumping in her car and racing off to follow up leads, with no time to give reasons to her (annoyingly priggish) Officer, Alison.

Do Coroners really do this? No matter, it makes for an entertaining yarn!

As expected

A solid installment in the Jenny Cooper series. Good research into the topic of genotyping and biological weapons underlines the book. The finish is a bit loose and one wonders for a while what happened to Allison. But in the end Jenny ends up at her bedside and leaves the listener wanting to get the next installment. Also, as usual, a fine performance of narrator....
