Publisher's Summary

January 1910. A journalist has been killed in a suspicious blaze. Everything points to a group of suffragettes, but the apparent culprit insists she is innocent.

When Lady Hardcastle receives a letter from a suffragette requesting her urgent help, the retired spy turned sleuth knows only she stands between an accused young woman and the gallows. Evidence at the scene makes Lizzie Worrel’s innocence difficult to believe, and with the police treating it as an open-and-shut case of arson, Lady Hardcastle faces a barrage of resistance as she tries to dig out the truth.

With her trusted maid and confidante, the formidable Flo, Lady Hardcastle sets off in pursuit of the truth as time runs out for the accused suffragette. Was she set up? And if so, is the real culprit a traitor to the cause - or part of a darker conspiracy?

So charming & wonderful

I love all these books! The friendship between Flo and Lady Hardcastle is delightful. This book has smart, witty dialogue and always a wonderful curveball in the plot.

Perfectly enjoyable

In the fifth installment (4 novels plus one Christmas short) of the Lady Hardcastle mysteries, Flo and Emily get involved with the wrongful imprisonment of a lady suffragette. They spend most of the story away from home, which gives us a chance to meet new and delightful characters, plus of course, a few baddies. It was a completely engaging story, beautifully narrated as always, by Elizabeth Knowelden. I love the era of this series, the writing style, the characters, the witty banter, and love that shows through those characters. I'm hoping T.E. Kinsey continues to write prolifically.

Always a good listen!

I have really enjoyed this author's previous books and this one is no exception! He has a wonderful knack for mixing things up and having different approaches to a story. His stories are very different from Dame Agatha, but easily just as entertaining. If you like her writing, you will like T E Kinsey. The narrator does a wonderful job of telling the story and of the voices, avoiding the peeves I have about improper name pronunciation and inconsistency of voices. The Lady Hardcastle series is a must buy for me.

Entertaining cozy crime

I enjoy the characters and the setting. It is not 'edge of your seat' or nail biting but it is thoroughly entertaining and I rather like the clarification of the true history parts at the end.
