Publisher's Summary

The young warrior Bingmei pits her courage, combat skills, and very life against a brutal tyrant’s dark magic in the follow-up to Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jeff Wheeler’s The Killing Fog.

The orphaned Bingmei didn't choose to be a hero. She has no wish to cross the Death Wall to save the world. But she has awakened Echion, emperor of the Grave Kingdom and Dragon of Night, and it is her destiny to defy him. From his imperial city of ancient sorcery and immortal darkness, Echion conspires to fulfill his own destiny: vanquish Bingmei, revive his queen, and rule together for another eon unchallenged.

Traversing a labyrinth of caves and mountains, Bingmei and her band of allies prepare their defense against a fateful war they cannot win. But when they are overcome by Echion's terrible power, Bingmei is left vulnerable to a ruthless assassin...one with orders to capture, not kill.

Before he destroys her, Echion craves something more than Bingmei's soul. Only she has the power to resurrect Echion's ancient queen, Xisi, whose evil is matched only by his own. Once reunited, their dark shadow will fall like a shroud over the realms. To be a savior, Bingmei must first survive what she has unleashed, and to survive she must begin to understand the seeds of power she’s never learned to control.

Critic Reviews

“Emily Woo Zeller returns to narrate the second audiobook in The Grave Kingdom series. Bingmei and her diverse fighter companions travel the continent, battling and narrowly escaping the Dragon of Night in order to resist their destiny. Zeller delivers the danger, friendship, and romance of the story in a variety of voices that depict an intricate group of characters. Especially noteworthy is her portrayal of Bingmei; Zeller pays special attention to her emotional growth by transitioning from a timid tone to a more determined one as Bingmei faces the brutality of her world. Despite the story's slow pace, Zeller keeps listeners engaged with a captivating narration.” (Audiofile Magazine)

"Fans of Wheeler's work and Asian-influenced fantasy will find this a worthy outing." (Publishers Weekly

“Wheeler once again blends exciting confrontations with depth of characterization and superb world building.” (Booklist)

Another winner from Jeff Wheeler

I love the worlds Wheeler creates. This book had me so captivated I had to be careful when driving to not completely slip away into the story. My only complaint is now I have to wait for the next book to be released. ;)

Losing interest

I have ordered the final book in the trilogy, but only finishing because I started. The narrator always sounds bored which isn't helping to keep my interest. Perhaps the third book I will read and skip the audio.

He's done it again!

I've not read one book written by Jeff Wheeler yet, that didn't captivate me within minutes. They are all very hard to put down, so beware if you have more things to do than finish the story on hand.
Also the audio book is very recommendable, Emily Woo Zeller does a great job reading with, I suppose, a correct pronunciation of the Chinese names.

Narrator whispers too much

The story is interesting and unique. The narrator’s voice is grating. She has improved the character voices and handles the Asian names and places well but when in her “narrator” voice she whispers and it just grates on your last nerve.

Great Story

I only had one issue with the book and it was the way the narrator portrayed the two big baddies. The inflections of her voice didn't give the sense that these were all powerful dragons. it was cartoonist at some point. when I read it from the text the voice sounded differently in my own imagination.

Jeff Wheeler writes incredible worlds, populated interesting engaging characters and adds just enough detail to the scenes to not big the reader down and allows them to paint their own visions in their heads. amazing.

Suspenful

Couldn't put it down, anxious to see what happened next, who would survive the dragons.

Phoenix vs Dragon

In my minds eye and as a lover of mythical creatures I always thought the dragon and phoenix would be allies but not in these lands. Dragons are anti human and the phoenix is pro humanity. But just as diverse as we humans are so is the dragon species and these people are dealing with the dark ones. Secretly I hope there is a gold dragon somewhere that will challenge these evil beast. But I think its just going to be the phoenix, they are born of the fire and die in the same way but this war will be won with cunning and these dragons are not the brightest in the crayon box which is often the case with lawful evil personalities because they are just too self absorbed to see the bigger picture. Well I am off to read the 3rd and what appears to be the final book in this series and will see you all on the next review

10 Reasons Why You Spend Your Credit Here

1.) It's better than Book #1

2.) No swearing and no overly sexu@l scenes. Because it doesn't need it! Now, this doesn't mean there is no romance, but the love stories are just that, love not s e x.

3.) The world building is interesting, fresh, detailed but not overly complicated or bogged down with too many details (as many scifi/fantasy books are prone to)

4.) Magic! The magic in this book comes from a highly developed imagination.

5.) Character building. The culture, personalities and relationships really are what makes this book amazing. The Asian culture mixed with an almost Nordic environment makes so amazing heros and villains.

6.) Action packed!! Unpredictable. no dull moments. Seriously couldn't stop listening.

7.)You know that feeling of deja vu? That premonition that leads to reflex? The feeling someone is looking at you or general vague whisper of instinct?
Jeff Wheeler builds on this 6th sense, expands and pushes it out into the realm of magic. Winter Rose begins to listen and trust and the magic comes. After starting this series I even find myself listening more to my own inner voice:)

8.)I love ALL Jeff Wheeler books but this one is different because the source of magic is not a religion or belief system. As the Winter Rose faces her destiny, virtue and her own shortcomings her power manifests.

9.) I finished this book feeling inspired. To me, that is the difference between 4 stars and 5.

10.) Forshadowing.... but no spoilers here!!

The narration was good. Not amazing, but good. The performer's raspy low narration did grow on me after awhile. But the character voices were much louder, leading to me adjusting the volume alot. Annoying. 3 star in my opinion. (I wish Kate Reading had performed instead!!)

better than the first

the second in the series was better than the first for me. I guess because this was so different from other books I had read from this author it took a bit to get into it. since it's with my Kindle unlimited I decided to give the second book of try and I'm glad I did

Dire …… Read my review it’s a lot shorter and happier

I thought at the start of book one Killing Fog that the books had potential , as book one proceeded my thoughts were it was a bit slow but I put it down to getting the people involved and the back story laid out and the characters name’s confused me so trying to get attached to anyone was a little hard . Unfortunately as book one finished I was left wondering if it was worth listening to The buried World , as had invested the time to listen to book one I thought it only fair to finish the story ( it couldn’t get any worse surely) so I started it .. oh dear O.M.G it was sooooo slow and repetitive. But Hey-Ho I resolved to listen to it though just to hear how the “ goodies beat the baddies * , I have to say I could only listen to a couple of hours at a time before it bored me ridged, but slog on I did .
As the end loomed insight ( 4 hrs left )I got a bit worried the goodies were still getting battered without any light looming to show the change was coming . 3 Hours …still getting battered biting my nails now . 2 Hours ….hot & cold sweats . 1 Hour … it’s beginning to dawn on me..but still in denial. 1/2 hour to go … No No No it can’t be happening . 10 mins…still hoping for a happy ending ( for me at least) .Aggggggggg what epilogue..no way can I listen to another book in this series, so I will make up my own shorter , lighter , happier ever after.
Good luck if you read on ❤️‍🩹

Argh

narration is HORRIBLE. Can not rate story as could not finish it regardless of trying. No way I will try again.
