Publisher's Summary

A threat is called into the LAPD Bomb Squad, a team dispatched to a house whose owner is away, and a bomb disguised inside photography equipment exploded in the kitchen. But it is a second bomb hidden in the basement that has devastating consequences - half of the entire Bomb Squad is obliterated within seconds.

The fragmented unit turns to Dick Stahl, a former Bomb Squad commander who now operates his own private security company. Having just returned from a grueling job in Mexico, Stahl is reluctant to accept the offer, but senior technicians he had trained were among those killed. On his first day back at the head of the squad, Stahl's team is dispatched to a suspected car bomb outside a gas station. It quickly becomes clear to him that they are dealing with the same mastermind behind the weapon that killed 14 highly trained men and women barely 24 hours before - and that the intended target may be the Bomb Squad itself.

As the shadowy organization sponsoring this campaign of terror puts increasing pressure on the bomb maker, and Stahl becomes dangerously entangled with a member of his own team, the fuse on this high-stakes plot only burns faster. The Bomb Maker is Thomas Perry's biggest, most unstoppable thriller yet.

Bomb Maker- Life Taker!

Thomas Perry turns everything he pens into sheer adrenaline pumping, heart pounding, riveting masterpieces! This, the newest release from Mr. Perry, is a mixture of all the things we seek in books, and very rarely find all in one novel. It is one of those anomalies which flawlessly intertwines the perfect mix of psychological, romance, hold on to your hats thrill rides, and raises questions in regards to many of the characters, who are allusive and mysterious, leaving me questioning their motives. This mysteriousness combined with all the other facets meant I was not going anywhere I didn’t have to till I heard: "audible hopes you have enjoyed this program.” That’s an understatement!
Invest a credit, you will be glad you did, and it will not disappoint! ( : 0 )

I hope there's a sequel coming!!!!

Leave it to Thomas Perry to write himself out of the ball park again! One thing about this author is you can count on consistency. His plots are very realistic, his characters are believable and likable and the situations are human.
This book has a bomb maker who for reasons of his own has hired out his services to the highest paying to completely destroy the bomb squad in LA.
His first bomb takes out 14 people (half of the bomb squad). With a madman reigning terror over the city, former commander of the bomb unit (Dick Stahl) is recruited to fill in until a permanent replacement can be found. Stahl has no idea who the bomber is but he has a knack for diffusing the bombs and circumventing the failsafe switches rendering the bomb useless.
Meanwhile , he begins a relationship with one of the women he is working along side of. This only gives the media more fodder for the benefit of their own careers. Then someone in the media is bombed and Stahl becomes a suspect.
Super book with a great ending.
Joe Barrett is one of my favorite narrators. He does an outstanding job narrating.
This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5 star effort by Thomas Perry!

I've been a fan of author Thomas Perry since the 1982 release of his first novel titled The Butcher's Boy. Since 1982 he has released 24 more novels all worthwhile but only half earning 5 stars. After one of his weakest efforts with the release of Forty Thieves in 2016 Perry followed up with the outstanding The Old Man in 2017 and now with another 5 star winner titled The Bomb Maker in 2018. The Bomb Maker may be as good as The Butcher's Boy! I definitely recommend The Bomb Maker! With The Old Man and The Bomb Maker he does his best job of character development in a stand alone novel since The Butchers Boy (The Butcher's Boy became a 3 novel series but with Books 2 and 3 written more than a decade later). His timing with action and suspense are near perfect. Perry has a PhD in English and has been a professor of creative writing for most of his adult life. Now that he is 70 years old and retired his productivity has increased and the quality of his novels with it.

Joe Barrett narrates The Bomb Maker superbly.

Loved it

Im looking forward to more books by this author. The story was good and kept my attention up until the end. I didn't care for the ending, not bad ,but not what I was expecting after the build up. I would purchase with the narrator again Mr. Barrett did an excellent job.

I wish Mr. Perry could write a book every week

As with most of Thomas Perry’s novels, this one with a new main character, keeps you totally in grossed. The Bomb Maker starts a little slow before you are hooked beyond what you imagined was possible. His main characters are always skilled beyond what most men or women seem capable of doing. But his writing skill has you believing that there must be individuals this talented because he creates them so believable and yet so human. I hope as with his other series he writes many more stories for this one.

Another Crackling Tale

Thomas Perry is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. He is a master at suspense and disarming bombs is one of the most fraught endeavors imaginable. He also does an excellent job of laying out backstories about characters so the reader gets to know them. This includes the villains.
I definitely recommend this book and hope it has a follow-up as the characters have room to grow.

Great beginning, good middle, lousy ending

This book starts off so well. In fact it is incredibly intriguing, but the plot gets muddled the longer you go in. The anonymous terrorists, the gun shows...it all drags down an otherwise excellent story line - the BOMBMAKER and his bombs.

The ending is dreadful. It seems like it was thrown together at the last minute...I remember finishing the book and saying out loud in my car, “Are you SERIOUS? After all of that, THIS is the ending?!?!?” Anyway, don’t want to ruin it if you haven’t read the book / just don’t be surprised when you get to the end and have to shake your head in disappointment.
