Publisher's Summary

For over three decades, Ellen Datlow has been at the center of horror. Bringing you the most frightening and terrifying stories, Datlow always has her finger on the pulse of what horror listeners crave. Now, with the eighth volume of the series, Datlow is back again to bring you the stories that will keep you up at night.

Encompassed in the audio of The Best Horror of the Year have been such illustrious writers as: Neil Gaiman; Kelley Armstrong; Stephen King; Linda Nagata; Laird Barron; Margo Lanagan; and many others.

With each passing year, science, technology, and the march of time shine light into the craggy corners of the universe, making the fears of an earlier generation seem quaint. But this light creates its own shadows. The Best Horror of the Year chronicles these shifting shadows. It is a catalog of terror, fear, and unpleasantness as articulated by today's most challenging and exciting writers.

If you are a fan of Anthology books, don't be afraid to check this one out!

I love horror stories and anthology books in general. I have checked out a couple of these The Best Horror Of The Year and they are mixed bags. Some stories are slow burners and there are a few great ones scattered about. The narration is always pretty good! Don't be afraid to check these out. If you do you might miss out on really good stuff!!
Top stories for me:
My boy builds coffins
Lord of the sand
Decent
Black dog (Neil Giaman)
Snow
Universal Monsters
Indian Giver

Best Horror.... Not so much....

Any additional comments?

To title a novel as "Best Horror of the Year" sets a very high standard. A significant point was that each of the stories and their respective narrations deviated in quality, from mediocre to disappointing. None were particularly fear or terror invoking.

One scary story out of a dozen

I bought this for an 1800 mile road trip. Out of a dozen so far, I've only found one story amusing or even slightly scary. The narration on almost every story has been full and drab and is making me fall asleep while driving.

Pretty good for an anthology

Not too bad for an anthology. I have read other of these and they have been about the same. So I would say if you have read other volumes of this series and you like it, you will like this one. Like any Anthology there are hits and misses. The narrator's are really good at this. They really put you into the story.

These can't possibly be the best of the year

There were only a couple of stories that I actually enjoyed. The rest were boring, had no point, or had bad endings.

Way too many "cliff hangers"

Although the narration was fine the stories all seemed to ape popular writers some but failed. So many of these stories end on a confusing and lack luster cliff hanger I feel as if they needn't even been written. If you are looking for solid horror writing with satisfying pay offs, look elsewhere, (Save a few competent pieces). I've listened to many better, but not much worse.

Boring

The stories go no where? I hade to fight to pay attention. Nothing scary or creepy at all? I tried 7 titles before I finally gave up.

About 3 of the 20+ stories were actually interesting. The narration was very good...just needed interesting stories.
