This collection of recordings about Brother Cadfael—a Benedictine monk and amateur sleuth in the 12th century—are performed here by the ideal actor. Sir Derek Jacobi, who portrayed Cadfael in several television adaptations, captivates listeners with his renderings of Monk's Hood, Saint Peter's Fair, The Heretic's Apprentice, The Potter's Field, The Summer of the Danes, and Brother Cadfael's Penance.

These stories were always one of my favorites on PBS in the 90's. This recording is excellent. Just like I was watching them back in the day. 🙂

Simply put, there is no better choice for listening to Brother Cadfael stories. It's a pity all 20 adventures weren't included

As a long-time Brother Cadfael fan, I feel that Sir Derek Jacobi's reading of these Cadfael novels is as good as - if not better than - the excellent full-cast TV movies he starred in. He is absolutely amazing. Due to his portrayal of Brother Cadfael on TV, I naturally hear and see him as Brother Cadfael in my head. What's truly spectacular, though, is how well he also inflects each of the other characters, as well. Truly masterful, and I never tire of listening to his performance of these stories. No other narrator captures the essence of the characters or stories nearly as well. I only wish Sir Jacobi would narrate the other Cadfael novels, I would buy them in a heartbeat!

As a Benedictine Oblate, I find deep joy in these historically rich, spiritually grounded mysteries. The Adventures of Brother Cadfael captures monastic life with warmth and wisdom. Sir Derek Jacobi, well known for his work with the BBC, narrates with such depth and clarity—I could listen to these again and again. A true treasure.

Wonderful telling of the Peter Ellis stories. Jacob was great in the filmed version as the title character, but he is simply amazing as the reader. His many choices for vocal characterizations are impeccable. I can only hope to hear as many more as he has consented to record.

This is one of the very few occasions I wish I could add a sixth star for review..

Sir Derek Jacobi IS Cadfael!
